Kong: Skull Island Script Contains Reference to 2014's Godzilla

Last week, it was revealed that Legendary’s upcoming reboot of King Kong, titled Kong: Skull Island, had moved hands from Universal Studios to Warner Bros. Pictures and with it would set up a confrontation between the great ape and the king of the monsters, Godzilla.

In a new report on the transition, The Hollywood Reporter revealed an interesting nugget about the Kong: Skull Island script. The outlet reports that the script makes reference to the monster-hunting organization Monarch from 2014’s Godzilla, for which Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins were employees, already planting the seeds for the big-screen fight that likely won’t debut until 2019 at the earliest.

Ever since the reveal that another King Kong vs. Godzilla was in the cards, the idea has drawn criticism because of the colossal size of Godzilla compared to what will clearly be a dwarfed King Kong. An insider tells THR that: “Legendary is confident it can come up with a rationale to explain how Kong and Godzilla can do battle — and possibly become allies.”

Kong: Skull Island, which is being directed by The Kings of Summer‘s Jordan Vogt-Roberts from a script by John Gatins and Max Borenstein, aims to fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary’s story honors the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but places it in an entirely new, distinct timeline. Set for release March 10, 2017, the film will star Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Toby Kebbell, Jason Mitchell, Corey Hawkins, John C. Reilly, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tom Wilkinson.

Before Kong and Godzilla come to blows, a Godzilla sequel will be released, featuring a script by Max Borenstein and the return of Gareth Edwards as director. It has been hinted that we will see some other famous Kaiju, such as Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah, although none have been fully confirmed at this time. It’s set for release on June 8, 2018.

PACIFIC RIM 2 Delay Confirmed, Production Halted Indefinitely

The Hollywood Reporter has published a behind-the-scenes look at the relationship between Universal, Legendary Pictures, and Warner Bros., and it’s fascinating stuff if you follow the business side of the industry. I’d recommend reading the whole thing if you have time, but for those who are only looking for the highlight reel, the most important aspect that came to the forefront involves the future of Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim 2: Maelstrom.

A report last week indicated that production on the sequel had been delayed until sometime in 2016, but THR says “the project has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all).” That last part may be speculation on their part, but it might be an assessment coming from talks with sources close to the studio; basically at this point, the future of the movie is anything but assured. This could very easily turn into another one of those projects that falls into development hell and ends up never being made, despite getting inches from the starting line.

This is confirmation that the film is in big trouble, and my hope is for one of two outcomes: 1) Universal and Legendary change their minds and quickly set a new start date for Pacific Rim 2, or 2) that they immediately and definitively state that the film will never happen so del Toro doesn’t have to waste any more time on it before ultimately moving on to his next project. If half of the things he’s spent so much time developing actually came out, he’d be considered a prolific filmmaker instead of one who makes one movie every two to five years.

Simon Kinberg Confirms Plan For DEADPOOL, GAMBIT, and X-MEN Crossover

After the disastrous box office performance of Fantastic Four, it’s not too surprising that writer/producer Simon Kinberg said that film’s characters live in a parallel universe to the much more successful X-Men. But just because a crossover between those two properties seems unlikely at this point doesn’t mean Kinberg has entirely given up on the idea of crossovers. Continue reading

Puppet Master 11 In The Works

22096

In further horror news, in addition to earlier learning a third Jeepers Creepers flick is in development, now it’s become known the 11th Puppet Master film is in the works.

Writer and director Charles Band let the news be known about the next Puppet Master, titled “Axis Of Termination,” on a vidcast (see below).

“The last think I am going to let you know, since there are a lot of Puppet Master fans out there,” Band offered. “I think we are going to make – I hope at least – is attempt to make our best Puppet Master ever. It’s the very next film we are shooting after Killjoy’s Psycho Circus and Evil Bong: High 5. So we are going to shoot it either January or February. It’s call Puppet Master: Axis Termination. It’s the end of the Axis series. We had Axis of Evil and Axis Rising. This sort of ends that trilogy. It’s a very edgy, very hard script. It’s a departure. It’s much more like Puppet Master 3. That kind of vibe. That kind of blood. I think it’s going to be a real good one. We have a lot of good feedback from fans over the last few years about our last two Puppet Master films, and I think the script is going to be terrific, and we’ll deliver one that you guys will like.”

Puppet Master first appeared back in 1989 featuring the now classic anthropomorphic puppets, Blade, Pinhead, Jester, Tunneler, Leech Woman, Gengie, Shreddar Khan and lots more, brought to life through an Egyptian spell. In addition to the movies, there are Puppet Master comic books and figurines. Continue reading
