Wes Craven, Horror Maestro, Dies at 76

Wes Craven

Wes Craven, the famed writer-director of horror films known for the Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream movies, died Sunday after a battle with brain cancer. He was 76.

Craven, whose iconic Freddy Krueger character horrified viewers for years, died at his home in Los Angeles, his family announced. Survivors include his wife, producer and former Disney Studios vice president Iya Labunka.

Craven was a longtime summer resident of Martha’s Vineyard, where he moved permanently three years ago before returning to Los Angeles for work and health reasons. Craven claimed to have gotten the idea for Elm Street when living next to a cemetery on a street of that name when growing up in the suburbs of Cleveland. His five Nightmare on Elm Street films were released from 1984-89.

Similarly, Craven’s Scream series was a box-office sensation. In those scare-’em-ups, he spoofed the teen horror genre. The movies frequently referenced other horror movies.

Craven’s first feature film was The Last House of the Left, which he wrote, directed and edited in 1972. Continue reading

Patrick Stewart Is Open to Reprising His Captain Picard Role

What is the first thing that you think of when someone says the name Patrick Stewart? Many people think, Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The 75-year-old was talking to IGN about his new series Blunt Talk. In the interview, Stewart was asked whether we would be seeing him play his most iconic character again. This is what he had to say:

“It’s possible. I think it’s unlikely. But it’s possible. The series wrapped over 25 years ago and we’ve got a rather elderly Captain Picard now. So I don’t know. It would be… it could be entertaining.”

That doesn’t give a definite yes, but it is nice to know that he is up for reprising his role as Picard. I won’t call it a dead issue, due to the fact that the new timeline caused by the new Star Trek movies means any character can be seen again.

Would you love to see a new version of TNG? Something like a continuance of TNG where Picard is the Admiral for a new team on a continuing mission to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one has gone before. Or something like that. Let us know.

Vin Diesel Says xXx 3 Starts Filming This December

A year after The Fast and The Furious made him a star, Vin Diesel tried to kickstart another franchise with xXx, a film in which he played a former stuntman/extreme sports nut contracted as a secret agent by the NSA. It was as ridiculous as you’d imagine — I recall there being a lot of grinding down handrails — and Diesel went off to make The Pacifier while Ice Cube came in for xXx 2: State of the Union.

But Diesel, ever the franchise man, wants to return to his roots and after announcing he would be back for another sequel, it appears production is close to getting underway. In an Instagram post, Diesel says the movie — once called xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, though we’re not sure if that title remains or not — starts filming this December.
