Star Wars did not invent the concept of a magic blade, or even a laser sword — those pop up in Asimov’s Lucky Starr series, among others — but as with many of the series’ pulp influences, George Lucas refined and reduced them to their essential elements, creating the series’ ultimate addition to the pop-culture canon. Think of the otherworldly glow, the distinctive hum, the (illogical, but who cares?) weight of the blade. For the Jedi, a lightsaber is a symbol of their innate exceptionalism; for Luke, it’s a connection to his father; for the Sith, it’s one more way to assert their dominance over the weak. But of all the lightsabers we’ve seen in Star Wars so far, which one is the best? To answer that question requires an elegant listicle, for a civilized age. James Cameron is willing to admit more than a touch of performance anxiety the second time around.
His last film as a director, Avatar, scored nine Oscar nominations and grossed more than $2.7 billion around the globe – a record-setting amount of money that ushered in a new era of 3-D blockbusters.
But Avatar experienced a fairly torturous journey to screen, with studio bosses second-guessing Cameron’s technological demands, cost over-runs, and production delays. Its distributor, Twentieth Century Fox, almost backed out on a deal to make the movie at all.
Six years later, however, and Cameron is in the midst of ironing out the kinks on screenplays for second, third, and fourth installments of Avatar. “I’m in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now,” Cameron told EW during a recent phone interview. “Just refining. That’s in parallel with the design process. The design process is very mature at this point. We’ve been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much [set].”
So given that the hardest parts of research and development are already squared away, has the prospect of bringing a new installment to the screen gotten any easier this time around?
“No,” Cameron said, laughing. “Because you have to challenge yourself. Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn’t just some big fluke the first time. So we’ve got to deliver. I’ve created a nice rod for my own back, so they say.”

As a GenXer, I find it difficult, and sometimes frustrating talking about music to Gen Y-ers and Millenials. They are perfectly content to remain blissfully ignorant of anything before their time. But at least those conversations are cut short. Those with a sense of history, tend to dismiss the 1980’s culture as a whole. (Any argument given against the 80’s can also be applied to the 90’s, the aughts (’00’s), and even the 70’s.) But beneath its glitzy surface, and beyond the burning neon lights, were some hidden gems that have aged remarkably well. In fact, if they were remade today, many millennials would be hard pressed to believe the lyrics were more than double their age. I previously mentioned 5 such songs in a previous post.
