Robert Schwentke Eyed to Helm G.I. Joe Spinoff, Snake Eyes

Robert Schwentke Eyed to Helm Snake Eyes Spinoff for Paramount

Neither of the two G.I. Joe films were huge hits for Paramount. But perhaps a standalone feature centered on one of the team’s founding members will fare better. Variety reports that Robert Schwentke has entered talks to direct a Snake Eyes film for the studio.

Snake Eyes is the ninja commando known for his deadly ability with a sword and trench knives. However, he is also a highly skilled martial artist who can be just as dangerous unarmed. Snake-Eyes was living in solitude in the High Sierras when he was recruited to join G.I. Joe. His real name and backstory have long been sources of mystery. As a result of being caught in a helicopter explosion, he is heavily scarred and mute. To hide his face, he usually appears in a black balaclava and matching bodysuit. Actor and stuntman Ray Park played Snake Eyes in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Since the new film is rumored to be a reboot, it’s unlikely that Park will be reprising the role.

Last year, Paramount set a March 27, 2020 release date for a new G.I. Joe movie, but it’s unknown if Snake Eyes is in the film. Schwentke previously directed RED and R.I.P.D., both of which were based on existing comic books. He also helmed two installments in the Divergent series. His most recent effort is the German film The Captain, which was set during World War II and released last year. If Schwentke formally joins the project, he’ll be directing from a script written by Beauty and the Beast scribe Evan Spiliotopoulos

15 G.I. Joes That Would Never Fly in today’s culture

G.I. Nope: 15 G.I. Joes That Would Never Fly Today

Cobra is a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule over the world. Who will stop them? G.I. Joe, of course! The Joes had a giant roster that consisted of people with diverse backgrounds and specialties. Some specialized in hand-to-hand combat, others piloted vehicles, and as the series expanded from toys to comics, cartoons, and live action series, the tone became less militant and more fantastical. G.I. Joe started with such Joes as Stalker and Grunt, but now you have characters like Sci-Fi and Crazylegs. There are however some characters from the early days of G.I. Joe that would be better forgotten about.

There are G.I. Joes that feel like they were created during different times. Some of the Joes that we have on our list are here due to cultural insensitivities that in hindsight could have been done with much greater care. Other Joes are mentioned because the logic is way off and it insults our intelligence as a(n adult) viewer.  Some made the list because they were odd choices that were too either too silly or too serious to be played with. You’ll cringe, you’ll laugh, and you’ll wonder where it all went wrong as we take a look at 15 G.I. Joe characters that would never fly today.

The 10 Lamest G.I. Joe Characters ever

Joe, I grew up with this franchise, but I’ve got to say, some of the G.I. Joe members that Hasbro came up with are pretty ridiculous. Here are ten characters that really have no business being G.I. Joes. These characters are so lame it was hard to find decent pictures of them.
