Chuck Berry, a founding father of rock ‘n’ roll, dead at 90

Chuck Berry listens for the crowd to sing to him as he performs "Johnny B. Goode" at the Concert for the Hall of Fame in Cleveland in 1995. He died on Saturday.

Chuck Berry, the colorful, enigmatic, ornery and elusive genius who delivered the seminal guitar chords of rock ‘n’ roll, died Saturday at his St. Louis-area home. He was 90.

St. Charles County police officers responding to a report of a medical emergency found the legendary rocker unconscious about 12:40 p.m., authorities said.

Berry was pronounced dead about 45 minutes later after first responders failed to revive him, authorities said.

Bruce Springsteen was among a slew of rock giants who paid tribute to the man known as a founding father of the genre.

“Chuck Berry was rock’s greatest practitioner, guitarist, and the greatest pure rock ‘n’ roll writer who ever lived,” The Boss tweeted.

The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger offered a poetic take on Berry’s inimitable legacy.

“He lit up our teenage years, and blew life into our dreams of being musicians and performers,” Jagger said on Twitter.

“His lyrics shone above others and threw a strange light on the American dream. Chuck, you were amazing, and your music is engraved inside us forever.”

Even Bill and Hillary Clinton paused to honor Berry. “The man was inseparable from his music — both were utterly original and distinctly American,” they said. “He made our feet move and our hearts more joyful.”

In a way Berry wrote his own epitaph more than a half century ago in his 1958 hit “Johnny B. Goode.”

“He could play a guitar,” Berry wrote, “just like a-ringin’ a bell.”

The classic chords that propelled 1950s Berry hits like “Johnny B. Goode,” “Maybellene,” “School Day,” “Roll Over Beethoven” and “Sweet Little Sixteen” guided virtually every later rock guitarist, starting with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys and Eric Clapton.

“Chuck was probably the hardest person I’ve ever had to work with, including Mick Jagger,” Keith Richards said after organizing a 1986 show celebrating Berry’s 60th birthday. “But it was worth it, because he’s where it all started.”

Berry, seen in 1959, was found by cops at his St. Louis-area home.

Earlier that year Richards had inducted Berry as the first-ever member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Berry was half of rock ‘n’ roll’s original twin pillars, next to Elvis Presley. He never sold as many records as Elvis, but his sound was just as distinctive and defining — and unlike Elvis, Berry was a lyricist and composer.

“You weren’t a rock guitarist,” wrote critic Dave Marsh, “if you didn’t know the riveting lick that kicks off ‘Johnny B. Goode.’ ”

Charles Edward Anderson Berry was born in St. Louis on Oct. 18, 1926. By the early 1950s he had been a GM worker, a cosmetologist and a three-year reform school student following a car theft and robbery spree.

He also had a wife, Themetta, and two daughters Darlin and Melody. The pair would have two more children, a daughter Aloha and son Charles Jr.

To earn extra money he played guitar at night — mostly jazz, though he was conversant with blues, rhythm and blues, country, popular and Latin music.

In the early 1950s he joined the Johnnie Johnson Trio, and in 1955 legendary bluesman Muddy Waters introduced him to Phil and Leonard Chess of Chess Records.

He reconfigured a country standard, “Ida Red,” into “Maybellene,” a humorous tale that likened a car chase between a Cadillac and a V8 Ford to the singer’s pursuit of his gal. “Maybellene” caught on with powerful rock ‘n’ roll deejay Alan Freed, who took half a writer’s credit and promoted Berry heavily on the radio, TV, stage and in the movies “Rock Rock Rock” and “Mr. Rock and Roll.”

Other musicians have paid tribute to Berry, seen performing during the 2009 Rose Ball in Monaco.

In one memorable scene, Freed’s deejay character says his box-office receipts have been frozen, so he can’t pay the artists. Berry assures Freed he will play anyway, saying, “This one’s for rock ‘n’ roll.”

That scene became a classic because the real-life Berry would not play a note until his cash fee was secure in his hands.

Berry became a jukebox icon with a stream of radio hits about cool cars, the malt shop, high school, teenage music and teenage love.

Dismissed by adults as simplistic rhymes, they were some of the first rock ‘n’ roll poetry, full of great one-liners, wit, winks and even subtle social commentary.

Berry is also credited with popularizing the duck walk, an onstage move he initially invented in 1956 to “hide the wrinkles” in his lone suit.

And he’s rock ‘n’ roll’s only intergalactic star — a recording of “Johnny B. Goode” was included on the interstellar Voyager spacecrafts’ “Golden Record.”

“If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it Chuck Berry,” John Lennon once said.

Berry was also one of the genre’s first bad boys. He was arrested in December 1959 for illegally bringing a minor suspected of being a prostitute across state lines. He was convicted in 1962 and served 18 months in prison.

Behind bars, Barry continued making music, writing the hits that would revive his career — “Promised Land,” “No Particular Place to Go” and “Nadine.”

By the 1970s he had become one of the first “rock ‘n’ roll revival” artists. He toured endlessly and hired local bands to back him — including, one night, a young Bruce Springsteen’s.

In 1972 Berry had his last radio hit, and his only No. 1, with the novelty song “My Ding-A-Ling.” By the end of the 1970s Berry had been invited by President Jimmy Carter to play at the White House and had served five months in prison for tax evasion.

He won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1985 and was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1987.

The “Johnny B. Goode” musician is congratulated by Keith Richards as they perform together during a concert celebration for Berry’s 60th birthday at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis, Mo., in 1986.

Along the way he also sued the late John Lennon because Lennon pinched the line about “a flat-top” from Berry’s “You Can’t Catch Me” and used it in the Beatles’ “Come Together.”

Lennon settled by agreeing to record three Berry songs on his “Rock ‘N’ Roll” album.

His reputation took another hit in 1989 when he was sued by several women claiming that he had videotaped them in the bathroom of his restaurant near St. Louis. Berry eventually admitted to the pervy acts and paid restitution to 74 women.

Berry ultimately became wealthy, living with his family and a huge collection of expensive cars at his Wentzville, Mo., estate.

The tireless musician rocked and rolled into his 80s — even performing in South America four years ago at the age of 86.

Berry’s final New York performance was a 2011 New Year’s Eve show at B.B. King’s where he closed out the night with “Auld Lang Syne” and “Johnny B. Goode.”

Singer Martha Reeves was signing autographs after her own Saturday night performance at the famed Times Square venue when she learned of Berry’s death.

“It’s breaking my heart to hear this … I love Chuck Berry,” Reeves told the Daily News after her show. “He had a habit of getting all of his money and putting it in his guitar case and going on stage with it right there. I loved him for that. Best guitarist I’ve ever heard.”

Several rock lovers took a moment outside the famed Times Square venue to remember Berry.

“I’m absolutely sick about it,” said Janet Kent, 65, of the Upper East Side. “It was the foundation of my music-loving experience.”

A former jazz musician who identified himself as Oscar J. said he’d remember Berry for his stylish moves on stage.

“The duck walk. Putting the guitar behind his head. He was doing all that before Jimmy Hendrix,” Oscar said. “Not to say anything bad about Hendrix.”

Because Berry was reclusive, fans debated for decades whether his experiences with the law and the music business had embittered him.

He said in a 1986 interview he was not bitter, just private.

“I love rock ‘n’ roll,” he said. “It’s been very good to me and I think I’ve given something back.”

Hugh Jackman Originally Wanted Different ‘Logan’ Ending’

Logan has repeatedly been called more of a Western than a superhero film, especially with Shane figuring into the plot. Yet Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold have often said Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven was their biggest reference point, although Jackman now says he originally wanted Logan to end more like Unforgiven did.

Jackman told this to Yahoo Movies’ Ethan Alter, in an interview that obviously went into very heavy spoilers.

WARNING: MASSIVE SPOILERS FOLLOW

Jackman raved that the power of Unforgiven‘s final battle lay in Eastwood’s William Munny surviving it, even after going back to his brutal murderous ways. But since he “embraces all the darkness he’s tried to put outside him” according to Jackman, it makes it “almost more devastating” that he has to live with it instead of being killed off.

Originally, Jackman thought that was how Wolverine had to go out as well, although Mangold was always committed to killing him. But Jackman argued at first “Let’s be open, because it may be more powerful for him not to die,” until Mangold swayed him over.

Ultimately, Jackman agreed with Mangold that “Unlike a human character, what’s most poignant for someone who is thought to be indestructible is him dying while saying, ‘This is what it feels like.’” Whereas Munny mowed down his enemies and sacrificed any notions of peace to avenge his best friend’s death, Wolverine was allowed to be at peace after one last rampage to save the life of his genetic daughter.

If Logan had survived, few would have figured it was for the reasons Jackman wanted him to live, but rather to leave wiggle room for him to come back anyway. Although Jackman has insisted he is done with Wolverine, giving him any room to live would have made many predict his return at some point, whether Fox lured him back into another X-Men prequel or whether Ryan Reynolds wore him down for a Deadpool/Wolverine team up.

In its final product, Logan likely couldn’t have worked at all without closing the door completely on Jackman’s Wolverine. While Fox and Marvel surely won’t leave well enough alone forever and will have another Wolverine at some point, either through recasting or through giving the mantle to young X-23/Laura, this is one major comic book movie death likely to stick.

Audiences can continue to mourn that death in theaters now, as Logan goes up against fellow so-called monsters in King Kong and Disney’s Beast in its third weekend.

Crunchyroll Screens Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress Compilation Films in Theaters

Crunchyroll announced on Friday that it plans to screen the Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress compilation films in theaters in North America on April 26. Both films will screen in a double feature on the same day as part of Crunchyroll‘s “Anime Movie Night” event series.

Tickets will go on sale for the public on March 24 and for Crunchyroll premium members on March 21.

The compilation films, which cover the anime’s first season, premiered on December 31 and January 7 in Japan. Both ran for two weeks in theaters. In addition to compiling footage from the television series, the films also include some new and enhanced scenes.

The original television anime premiered last April 7 and ended on July 1. The series streamed on Amazon Prime Video with English subtitles as it aired in Japan.

The anime reunited director Tetsuro Araki and Wit Studio, the team responsible for Attack on Titan. Code Geass creator Ichiro Okouchi wrote the scripts. Haruhiko Mikimoto (Macross 7, Gunbuster) designed the original characters, and Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan, Aldnoah.Zero) composed the music.

The series streamed on Amazon Prime worldwide. Crunchyroll announced plans to release the series on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in North America with an English dub, and Funimation is now handling the release as part of the two companies’ partnership.

A new Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress anime has been green-lit and is slated for 2018.

Henry Cavill Joins the Mission: Impossible 6 Cast

Christopher McQuarrie has revealed, via Instagram, that Superman star Henry Cavill (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, upcoming Justice League) has joined the Mission: Impossible 6 cast! He will join Tom Cruise in the Paramount Pictures and Skydance sequel, which will also see the return of Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, and Jeremy Renner. It was recently revealed that The Crown and Everest star Vanessa Kirby will have a role as well.

Production on the upcoming Mission: Impossible 6 is set to begin April 10 in Paris with McQuarrie, who previously helmed Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, once again writing and directing. McQuarrie noted in a recent interview that even more familiar faces from the franchise will be returning for the upcoming film.

McQuarrie’s return to the franchise marks the first time a director has helmed more than one Mission: Impossible film. Brian De Palma directed the original adaptation, which was followed by sequels directed by John Woo, J.J, Abrams and Brad Bird.

DC Films Looking to Shoot One More Film in 2017 to Fill Batman Void

DC Films Looking to Shoot One More Film in 2017 to Fill Batman Void

DC Films looking to shoot one more film in 2017 to fill Batman void

After news earlier this week that The Batman shoot will be postponed until 2018, pushing the release date firmly into 2019, Variety‘s Justin Kroll is reporting that Warner Bros. and DC Films are looking to potentially fill the void left in their 2018 release slate with one of five

Currently James Wan’s Aquaman is the only DC Extended Universe movie on track for release next year, with filming starting this year on May 22 in Australia and Italy for a just-announced December 21, 2018 release date. Because of The Batman director Matt Reeves’ commitment to complete work on War for the Planet of the Apes through June of this year, plus a rumor that the script is getting a total overhaul, that film won’t be ready in time for a 2018 release. In its place, DC Films is currently considering fast-tracking one of these five films to take its place:

The Flash
Green Lantern Corps
Gotham City Sirens
Suicide Squad 2
Dark Universe

Therein lies the rub: All of these films are either in very early development or in a state of disarray. The Batman was originally pushed forward from a 2019 to 2018 release date after The Flash lost director Rick Famuyiwa over creative differences, but then Ben Affleck dropped out as Batman director as well. The core cast of The Flash is already in place with Ezra Miller reprising his role as Barry Allen, Billy Crudup as his father Henry Allen and Kiersey Clemons as Iris West. Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) is currently hard at work on a page one rewrite after Famuyiwa, Seth Grahame-Smith and Phil Lord & Christopher Miller all took a crack at it. The original story was said to be a buddy movie with Flash and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg, though that may have changed due to…

Green Lantern Corps, which hired writers David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes at the same time it hired Harold to revamp The Flash. It makes sense they would want a new direction for The Flash, since its been said that Green Lantern Corps will essentially be a “buddy cop” movie with Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart. This is probably the least-likely film to get fast-tracked to next year since it has only just begun serious development and no hard casting has been done. One film that does have some casting in place is…

Gotham City Sirens, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad spin-off starring the lovely lady villains of Gotham, led by Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, is rumored to be the film’s villain, with Haley Bennett hinted at as a possibility to take on the role of Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, and Megan Fox also rumored for the Poison Ivy role. Ayer proved with Suicide Squad that he could churn out a blockbuster movie with a quickness (the script was written in six weeks), though reviews and fan reaction showed that maybe that’s not such a good idea. This might be the most likely to push forward and make that 2018 release slot.

As for Suicide Squad 2, Warners and DC are actively looking at a range of directors to fill in for Ayer, including Oscar winner Mel Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge), Daniel Espinosa (Life), Jonathan Levine (Snatched) and Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland). Levine seems not so likely since he just signed on to make the comedy Flarsky with Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen, and has expressed little interest in doing superhero movies after being on the shortlists for Doctor Strange and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Fleischer has been in movie jail since Gangster Squad bombed, but he has a good relationship with Warners and was once on track to direct Justice League. The studio just hired Legend of Tarzan writer Adam Cozad to pen the script, but with a big cast to wrangle, it seems unlikely to see this one before 2019, despite it clearly being a priority for the studio.

Finally we come to the long-in-development Dark Universe, a.k.a. Justice League Dark. The project was previously under the stewardship of Guillermo del Toro, but the studio passed on his take. Last August, they put experienced action helmer Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Edge of Tomorrow) on the film, after he bailed on Fox’s Gambit solo movie. Working from a script by Michael Gilio, Liman is an interesting choice to helm a team-up movie with John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon, though he has little experience with either superheroes or the supernatural. He’s also known for busting budgets and schedules, with the original Bourne delayed a year in order to fix problems. If Warners wanted to fast-track a movie, Dark Universe under Liman would not be a safe bet.

With all that said, Kroll notes that DC Films could (wisely) decide none of these films are ready to go and make 2018 a breather year with only one movie, as Marvel Studios did in 2012 when they cancelled production on Runaways and only released The Avengers.

That said if scripts aren’t ready to go, studio is content just shooting AQUAMAN this year till films are ready to go

Which of these five DC Films would you like to see the most? Should Warners fast-track these movies or give them more time to develop? Let us know in the comments below!

Ridley Scott Reveals the Title of His Next Alien Film and Starts to Spill Too Much Information

During a recent interview with Fandango, Alien: Covenant director Ridley Scott started letting all kinds of details fly about his plans for the Alien franchise. He started spilling so many details that the star of Covenant, Katherine Waterston, kept trying to cut him off to prevent him from saying anything more!

He reveals the title of the next Alien film he has planned; how there will be another film that will lead directly into his original Alien film; and says that if the movies do well, there will be five new Alien films total. Here’s how that conversation goes down:

“There will be another one before we kind of literally and logically, clockwise, back into the rear back head of [the original] Alien,” he said.

We asked Scott what the timeline looked like — would it be PrometheusCovenant and then this next movie before we arrive at the events of the original Alien. That’s when the answer became a bit foggy as it appears he slips in the title for another movie we haven’t seen yet and positions it between Prometheus and Covenant.

“It will go PrometheusAwakeningCovenant.. fairly integral where this colonization ship is on the way….”

Waterston cut in again to stop Scott from spoiling any more information. “You’re giving away too much!” she screamed. “But yes, there will be more after this. I think that was the question.” To which Scott replied, “If this is successful, and then the next one, and then there will definitely be three more.”

Damn! Scott was ready to reveal his whole plan for the franchise! Unfortunately, Waterston wouldn’t let him. At least we got the information that we did. Alien: Awakening seems like a solid title, and I’m really curious to see how his next film leads up to the events in Alien.

It’s awesome to see Scott excited about the Alien franchise again. Unfortunately, that means we’ll probably never get to see Neill Blomkamp‘s Aliens sequel. I just wish the studio would have let both projects roll forward. We are getting at least two Star Wars and Marvel films a year, why can’t Fox release two Alien films in a year?

Anyway, I’m excited for Alien: Covenant! I hope that it’s great and that Scott gets to make all the Alien films that he wants!

Future STAR WARS Films Won’t Rely on the Legacy Characters From the Original Trilogy

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the first film in the franchise that didn’t rely heavily on the legacy characters from the original trilogy. Yeah, Darth Vader and Princess Leia both has small parts to play, but the story focused on completely new characters.

This is what the future of Star Wars films looks like… movies that will focus on new and different characters that won’t rely on the characters from the original trilogy. Rogue One co-writer Gary Whitta recently talked about what Lucasfilm’s future movie plans are with ComingSoon saying:

“I think you’ve already seen us get 90% of the way there with Rogue One. Yes you see Leia, yes you see the Death Star and Vader, because those are elements of that story and they belong there, you can’t tell that story without those characters. But for the most part, 90% of that story is completely new characters. Completely new planets and places you’ve never seen before. …. The next spin-off is ‘Han Solo,’ that’s another familiar character, but I think increasingly you’re going to see… One of the things we really want to do at Lucasfilm is create a universe and not keep relying on old legacy characters. We’ve got Rey and Finn and Kylo Ren, they’ve already introduced a new generation of characters. Whatever kind of Star Wars films they’re making 10 or 20 years from now, I don’t think they’re going to be relying on the same legacy story elements as we have in the past.

After seeing how great Rogue One was, I’m actually excited about the aspect of seeing new original Star Wars films that focus on new characters. With the standalone Han Solo film, possible Boba Fett film, and the rest of the saga films, I think it’s going to be awhile before we see Lucasfilm fully embrace this idea. I think a lot of their upcoming Star Wars Story films will focus on legacy characters. Whitta went on to say:

“I’m speaking purely as a fan. I obviously have no idea what their plans are for the franchise. I did my small piece of it, but it makes sense to me that you don’t want to keep telling the same story over and over again. You want to tell new stories.”

It’ll be interesting to see what Lucasfilm will be doing with their Star Wars films three to five years from now after Star Wars: Episode IX is done. That film will most likely bring an end to the Skywalker saga, and from there, Lucasfilm can start to really explore new characters in the Star Wars universe.

What do you all think about the idea of Star Wars legacy characters being phased out?

THE MATRIX Reboot Writer Says “No One Could or Should Reboot THE MATRIX”

A couple days ago the crazy, unexpected news hit that Warner Bros. was looking to reboot The Matrix. It never even crossed my mind at the time that anyone would ever attempt to reboot The Matrix, and it sounds like maybe that’s not the plan for the franchise after all.

In the initial announcement, we learned that The Incredible Hulk screenwriter Zak Penn would write a story treatment for the film. After he saw The Matrix fans respond negatively to the news of the reboot, he took to Twitter to set the record straight:

“All I can say at this point is no one could or should REBOOT the Matrix. People who know Animatrix and the comics understand. Can’t comment yet except to say that the words ‘reboot’ and ‘remake’ were from an article. Let’s stop responding to inaccurate news. If I were going to recast Keanu Reeves, I would cast Keanu Reeves.”

In his comment, he brings up the Animatrix anime anthology film. In case you don’t know, that’s a compilation of nine animated short films that detail the backstory of the Matrix universe, including the original war between man and machines that led to the creation of the Matrix. He also brings up the comics.

This could mean several different things. It could mean that the new Matrix film will be a prequel to The Matrix; or it could be a spinoff; a continuation of the story; or a completely different story with different characters set in the same universe.

One thing this statement makes clear is that the events that took place in the original Matrix trilogy will be a part of the mythology of whatever Warner Bros. and their creative team are planning. The one thing that I’m hoping for is that Reeves will make a comeback as Neo. I’d be cool with that.

2017 NYCC will not sell 3-Day or 4-Day passes

NYCC New York Comic Con

It’s almost that time of the year again! Which means it’s pre-pre registration time for New York Comic Con tickets. Those that jumped through their hoops to get tickets last year, like myself, received a new message in their inboxes this morning. It’s from ReedPOP, the company that runs NYCC. It’s a typical newsletter sent to fans. The good news is that the dates for this year’s NYCC is October 5 – 8, 2017. But it includes one paragraph of what many might consider bad news….
