If you weren’t a fan of the way director Rian Johnson handled the answer to Rey’s origin in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, you’ll be happy to know that that’s not the final word. In a recent interview with HuffPost, the director talks about why he took this aspect of the story in the direction that he did and also says the real truth behind Rey’s parentage is still open.
Over the past few days, I’ve been having a ton of conversations with people regarding Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Whether you loved it or hated it, the film has been a hot topic of conversation. During these conversations, there have been a few people who have had questions regarding Obi-Wan Kenobi and why he didn’t show up. Then some people have brought up old rumors regarding Lando Calrissian’s involvement.
It’s not a spoiler to tell you that these two characters are not in the movie, but I’m going to throw up a spoiler warner because some spoiler things are discussed.
There are so many unexpected surprises in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and one of the biggest ones is the appearance of a certain character that almost nobody expected to even show up. While talking with writer/director Rian Johnson, /Film learned the story behind this very surprising moment.
This week marks Star Wars 40th Anniversary and Vanity Fair has given us an inside look at the upcoming The Force Awakens sequel, The Last Jedi. And for most fans of Star Wars this sequel is very important because, for the first time since Return of the Jedi, we will have LOTS of Luke Skywalker (if you don’t count the seconds he appears in The Force Awakens.) Many fans have a certain expectation of what Luke may be like in his later years. They are of course basing it on what they have seen him do in the previous films. Star Wars: Episode VIII director Rian Johnson recently sat down with USA Today to talk about his highly anticipated film project. During the interview, the director talked about what he wants from the film and how he approached handling its characters.
“I want it to be a blast and to be funny and to be a ride the way The Force Awakens and the original Star Wars movies were.”

Its release date may have just been pushed back, but production on the next proper Star Wars installment has gotten underway only a few weeks after originally scheduled. During an earnings call with investors (via EW), Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that filming on Star Wars: Episode VIII is now underway with writer/director Rian Johnson, presumably in London where Star Wars has its soundstage base of operations.
Cameras for Episode VIII actually began rolling last fall, as Johnson and Mark Hamill ventured to the Irish location of Skellig Michael, glimpsed at the very end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. They no doubt wanted to grab the necessary footage to pick up after the events of The Force Awakens before the weather took a sharp turn into winter, so they took part in what are called “pre-shoots,” or bits of photography done before principal photography has actually begun. Disney and Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: Episode VIII, originally scheduled for release in summer 2017, will now debut on December 15, 2017.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will still be released December 16, 2016.
The move makes sense. Not only does it give director Rian Johnson, who is rumored to be doing major rewrites, more time, it will now mirror the release schedule of The Force Awakens, which is still enjoying massive success over a month after release thanks to a lack of competition. The May release, the traditional date for the previous six Star Wars movies, would mean stiffer competition from other summer blockbusters.
