The Russo Bros. Discuss The Heavy Ending of INFINITY WAR and The Stakes Will Deepen in AVENGERS 4

I think this goes without saying due to the title of this article, but spoilers are coming.

—————-SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!—————

Who else was blown away by the end of Avengers: Infinity War? From the sudden fading of many favorite superheroes to the dramatic and very sad end to Peter Parker, it was a crazy ending. I am sure many of you are sitting there complaining about how we know everyone who vanished will be brought back somehow and therefore the gravity of the situation was lessened, let’s remember there’s another movie that is a continuation. If this movie taught me anything, it is that Marvel will surprise me, and I love it. I love how everyone was wrong about who was going to die, including me. That being said, what do the directors, Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, have to say about that ending? In a recent interview with Variety, the Russo brothers talked about the need to make these superhumans vulnerable so that the audience can relate to them and Anthony goes on to say:

“Unless you have real stakes, you’re sort of limited in terms of the emotional impact a story can have on you. You have to go to very difficult places for the stakes to feel real, for the characters to feel like they have something to lose, for the audience to feel like they have something at risk. What we’re looking for in storytelling or art is emotional catharsis. And that’s not simply getting what you want. It’s getting an emotional experience that makes you feel and respond to it and energizes you on some level.”

The Man Who Created Thanos Shares His Thoughts on Josh Brolin’s Portrayal

thanos2.jpg

If you’re a big Marvel fan, you may recognize the name, Jim Starlin. For those that don’t, he’s the one who created the Mad Titan Thanos back in 1973. Thanos is the big bad guy in Avengers: Infinity War and I think Josh Brolin knocks it out of the park. I’m just a writer for a geek site though. What does Starlin think of the portrayal? He revealed this much on Facebook:

“The Avengers the Infinity War! I really have to watch what I say here, so as to not spoil the many surprises this film holds (even for me). So let me stick with generalities, with a few specifics tossed in at the end, concerning Josh Brolin. Visually spectacular, as are all the Marvel movies. But this film hits emotional depths few of the others have even come close to, yet humor takes center stage at all the rights moments.

Red Skull May Still Be Alive in The MCU! Could He Show Up in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR?

red-skull-may-still-be-alive-in-the-mcu-could-he-show-up-in-avengers-infinity-war11

Fans have speculated for years that the Red Skull is not dead in the MCU. I personally never believed that he died at the end of Captain America: The First Avengers, and now thanks to an Avengers: Infinity War prelude comic book, we’ve learned that he’s not dead.

ScreenRant pointed out a panel in the comic that features a flashback scene from the film and as you’ll see below, it suggests that Red Skull was not vaporized by an explosion of blue energy from the Tesseract, which contains the Space Stone. Instead, we see a “fooshhhh” of energy transporting him into space! This seems to confirm the big fan theory that the Red Skull is still alive and kicking in the MCU.

Why would a prequel comic to Infinity War make a point of showing us this if Red Skull isn’t being primed to appear in Infinity War? We have no idea where he has been this whole time, but it’s not hard to think or believe that he might actually play a role in Thanos’ big plan of collecting all the Infinity Stones.

Hell, maybe any of the characters that we thought were destroyed by the Infinity Stones aren’t dead at all. Those other characters include Malekith from Thor: The Dark World, Ronan from Guardians of the Galaxy, and Ultron from Avengers: Age of Ultron. It’s very possible that some of these characters might be alive, but Red Skull is the one that would make most sense.

A few months ago, Samuel L. Jackson seemed to let it slip that Red Skull was still alive, saying:

“You didn’t see me in Civil War. I’m still out there trying to figure out what, you know, The Skull is going to…”

As we all might imagine and based on what we’ve seen in the trailer, there is no doubt that Avengers: Infinity War is going to be unlike any other movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with characters from all corners of the MCU uniting.  Now one of the actors who plays one of the most important characters, Chris Hemsworth is giving us a good idea of just how many to expect.

In a recent interview with Postmedia Network,  Hemsworth teased just how massive Infinity War will be, with over 70 characters appearing throughout the film in one way or another.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Director Says It’s Important For Heroes To Feel Pain

Screen_Shot_2017_11_29_at_8.29.28_AM.0.png

Pain and sacrifice are two of the most powerful tools used in good storytelling. And Avengers: Infinity War director Joe Russo says there will be plenty of both in their upcoming Avengers sequels. While answering questions for Chinese website Sina Weibo, Rosso explained:

“I don’t know about the need to accept it, but I will say this: we love being told good stories, and we love telling good stories, and all of our energy, and our effort, and our thought, and our passion goes into telling the best story that we can. And for us, the best stories have stakes. Characters have to make sacrifices. To really, really feel the true emotion and the hero’s journey they have to go through trials and those trails could cost them something.

“So, for us, its very important that the heroes feel pain and that they make sacrifices because I think that, not only is a great storytelling, but it also is inspiring and I think we need a lot of inspiration in this world right now. So, for us, I don’t know if we can ever get you to accept it, but I promise you this: we’ll do our damnedest to tell you the best story possible, and what you do with it from there is up to you.”

Joe Russo’s brother and co-director Anthony Russo agreed with him. It’s about time they do this. A lot of fans have been saying that these Marvel movies, as good as they are, haven’t really shown any real pain or sacrifice in their films. A few characters have died, but none have been overwhelmingly meaningful. Agent Coulson’s death might have been the most meaningful… until they brought him back to life for Agents of SHIELD. Then it meant nothing.

Avengers: Infinity War opens in theaters on May 4, 2018.
