Kelly Clarkson Gives Birth, Baby Girl River Rose

She’s here, y’all! Kelly Clarkson has given birth to her first child. The American Idol alum and her husband Brandon Blackstock have named their baby girl River Rose.

“Our baby girl River Rose Blackstock arrived on June 12th!” Clarkson tweeted on Saturday, June 14. “Thank you everyone for all of your well wishes! Brandon and I are on cloud 9!! :)”

Clarkson, 32, announced she was expecting a baby back in November 2013. “I’m pregnant!!!” she tweeted on Nov. 19. “Brandon and I are so excited! Best early Christmas present ever.”

Before that happy announcement, the “Tie It Up” singer gushed to Us about wanting to become a mom shortly after tying the knot with Blackstock in October. “More than anything, next I want a baby. Lots of them!” she told Us. “My record label is freaking out because all I can talk about now are babies. We’re really excited and want to get our family started.”

“I’m 31 and we’d like to do it the natural way. My eggs aren’t getting any younger!” she added. “So we’re really excited.”

Indeed, Clarkson went on to proclaim her desire for a baby girl, and eventually got her wish. “We just found out we’re having a girl officially! I knew it!” she tweeted on Jan. 20. “Only a girl could cause this much drama with all this vomiting ha!”

Clarkson stayed under wraps for most of her pregnancy, but finally revealed her baby bump for the first time in months on April 21. The Grammy winner stepped out with her growing belly for an Easter outing in Nashville, Tenn. with Blackstock, 37, at the time.

This is the couple’s first child together. Talent manager Blackstock, whose stepmom is country singer Reba McEntire, is already dad to daughter Savannah, 11, and son Seth, 7, from a previous marriage.

“I want two kids. Two more, that is,” Clarkson said in an interview with Elvis Duran and the Morning Show back in October. “I’ve already got two!”

Casey Kasem Dead at 82 June 15, 2014

PHOTO: Top 40 radio host Casey Kasem poses at a radio station in Los Angeles, Calif. in 2003.

Casey Kasem has died.

ABC News confirmed that the radio personality died today in a California hospital. He was 82.

Born Kemal Amin Kasem in Detroit, the disc jockey began his career in nearby Flint before becoming an announcer on Armed Forces Radio Korea Network in 1952. Upon his return, he went on to work at radio stations in California, Ohio and New York before launching “American Top 40” in 1970. He hosted that show until 1988, and then a revived version from 1998 until 2004, when Ryan Seacrest took over. From 1988 until 1998, Kasem hosted a show called “Casey’s Top 40.”

“Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars,” was how he ended every program.

“I just didn’t want to say goodbye. Every station I was at, I never said goodbye,” he later explained to the New York Times of his famous sign-off. “I don’t know why.”

Kasem, who was married twice and has four children, also had a colorful TV career, which included doing the voice for Shaggy on “Scooby-Doo” as well as voice-overs for many commercials. A devout vegan, he supported animal rights and environmental causes, as well as political organizations that spoke to him. Originally of Lebanese origin, Kasem felt it was important to improve Arab-Jewish relations.

In recent years, the radio personality’s health declined and in 2013, his daughter Kerri said he was suffering from a form of dementia. Around that time, his three oldest children and brother launched a claim that his wife Jean was not letting them see their father. A court denied a petition his daughter Julie launched to take care of her father in October 2013, but just last month, Kerri was granted conservatorship amid a battle with Kasem’s second wife, her stepmother, Jean.

“It’s a sad day for the broadcasting community and for radio listeners around the world,” said Ryan Seacrest, who took over “American Top 40” from Kasem in 2009, in a statement. “When I was a kid, I would listen to Casey Kasem’s AT40 show every weekend, and dream about someday becoming a radio DJ. So when decades later I took over his AT40 countdown show, it was a surreal moment. Casey had a distinctive friendly on-air voice, and he was just as affable and nice if you had the privilege to be in his company. He’ll be greatly missed by all of us.”

Unproduced Jim Henson Story Coming to TV and Comics

Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl didn’t have time to produce all the scripts they wrote. One example is Tale of Sand; it was found in the Henson archives and adapted by Archaia into a graphic novel three years ago. Another example is the Thanksgiving-themed The Musical Monsters of Turkey Hollow. It was written by Henson and Juhl at some point in the 1960s and intended to be a television special. It never made it to the screen though and was found in the same archives where Tale of Sand was tucked away. Luckily, the turkey-filled story is getting a second chance.

USA Today revealed The Musical Monsters of Turkey Hollow script is headed to television and to the pages of comics. CEO of the Jim Henson Co. Lisa Henson states both adaptations “are incredibly close to the original treatment.” Henson is working with Archaia on the graphic novel, and it will be written and drawn by Roger Langridge.

Here’s a peek at art by Langridge. Keep in mind it hasn’t been finalized:

Turkey Hollow Cover

The narrative sounds wacky in the best kind of way. It takes place during Thanksgiving in Turkey Hollow, New Hampshire in 1968. The town has 27 human residents and thousands of turkeys and also furry aliens who make musical sounds. The aliens befriend a boy named Timmy who plays the guitar, and drama ensues.

It sounds like there are plenty of interesting characters in the all-ages fairy tale as well as several creatures to admire. Lisa Henson gave Langridge reference photos of the Turkey Hollow alien puppets Jim Henson created back in 1968 so you know the art will have a Henson vibe.

The graphic novel will be out in October. Are you looking forward to The Musical Monsters of Turkey Hollow?

Mattel Signs New Toy Deal Around DC Comics Superheroes

Mattel re-ups with Warner Bros. toWarner Bros. Consumer Products has re-upped a deal with Mattel that will enable the company to create toys around DC Comics’ superheroes for the next several years.

The deal will include the likenesses of the characters in films, TV shows and from comicbooks. That includes “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” out in summer 2016, and the “Justice League” that will follow, both directed by Zack Snyder, along with Warner Bros. TV series “Arrow” and “The Flash.” It previously worked on Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, and 2013?s “Man of Steel.”

The extension, which is expected to last from three to five years, does not come as a surprise given that Mattel has been DC’s master toy licensee for 15 years, producing action figures, vehicles and role-playing accessories.

Deal continues to give the world’s largest toymaker access to DC’s vault, which includes over 1,000 heroes and villains like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and The Joker.

Toy brands involved in the pact include Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Barbie, Mattel Games and Fisher-Price.

“Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have an unrivaled portfolio of characters and a strong slate of content across all platforms which is essential to driving our global consumer products business—a business anchored by our long-term partnership with Mattel,” said Brad Globe, president, Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “With so much opportunity on the horizon, we know Mattel will bring the talents of its world-class organization to create and market product lines for fans of all ages.”

The studio is announcing the new Mattel deal as Hollywood is about to head to the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas next week to promote their brands and attract merchandise partners around core properties. Event takes place June 17-19 from the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

Warner Bros. generates around $6 billion from licensing deals each year. And Mattel has helped the company introduce DC’s characters to younger audiences through its Fisher-Price DC Super Friends Imaginext line (see above) that’s become a hit among the pre-school circuit around the world; Hot Wheels cars; and DC Comics Super Heroes action figure lines. For adults, there also vintage products tied to the 1960s Batman TV series and more updated Batman collectibles.

“In our fifteen years of collaboration with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, Mattel has been honored with bringing the stories and characters of the DC Comics universe to life in toy form,” said Doug Wadleigh, senior VP, global brands marketing, boys and entertainment for Mattel. “Mattel’s robust portfolio has helped extend DC Comics properties to new consumers utilizing the toy brands they know and trust. We are excited to continue our partnership, and look forward to supporting upcoming entertainment launches and franchise development.”

As WB and DC celebrate Batman’s 75th anniversary, Mattel will produce a line of Lights and Sounds 10-inch Core figures, an assortment of Hot Wheels Batmobiles, Batman Basic Figures, the all-new Batman 12-inch figure, as well as additional figures and characters to augment the assortment.

Mattel also has reinvigorated its collector offering with the new 6-inch Total Heroes line, and the four-inch DC Multiverse line of hyper-detailed action figures for the more serious collector.

“We look forward to continuing our strong relationship with Mattel and the Warner Bros. Consumer Products teams to collaborate on compelling product lines that support the many exciting DC Comics initiatives slated for the coming years including film, TV, games and comics,” said Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment.

Why E3 Could Leave Los Angeles

E3 Leaving Los AngelesThe Electronic Entertainment Expo, the videogame industry’s largest convention, could leave Los Angeles. If it does, it would cost the city $40 million a year in revenue.

The Entertainment Software Assn., which owns E3 — this is the event’s 20th anniversary — signed a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Convention Center in 2013, and is now considering requests by other cities to host the show starting in 2016.

The ESA declined to disclose the other cities vying for the show. Atlanta has hosted E3 twice, while a much smaller version took place in Santa Monica in 2007 and 2008.

A reason for E3?s move out of L.A. would be an aging convention center that needs a major update as other cities have spent considerable coin upgrading their own facilities. Los Angeles had hoped the LACC would have been expanded as part of the construction of the Farmers Field football stadium, but no team means city officials are now considering Plan B.

One major issue for ESA and other event organizers is that the LACC splits its main convention halls into two, separated by a hallway and smaller hall. That has made some exhibitors in the South Hall feel left out of the activity taking place in the West Hall (next to Staples Center), for example. Other convention centers typically off one large room for exhibitors and attendees.

E3 had around 230 exhibitors last year, with some companies bringing hundreds of people to the show from all over the world.

Farmers Field would have been built where West Hall currently stands and add new space to the rest of the LACC.

“That is no longer going to happen,” Mike Gallagher, president and CEO of the ESA, the gaming industry’s main trade organization. “All of the city’s efforts are now focused on Plan B.”

But the Los Angeles City Council and AEG, which operates the LACC’s 720,000 square feet of exhibition space, and L.A. Live complex will have to move quickly.

Plans for future E3 shows need to be in place within the next 90 to 120 days, Gallagher said, because the show typically takes a year to plan — especially for gaming giants like Sony’s PlayStation, Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo that build massive booths on the show floor.

“We (still) have time,” Gallagher said. “We’re going to work through this issue and have a lot of discussions with the city and the partners in the city that are critical to making E3 a success. But the time is relatively short.”

If E3 leaves, the move would cost the city of Los Angeles around $40 million in revenue each year, which is spent on hotel rooms and restaurants by the 50,000 that attend the show each year. San Diego also has had to deal with a convention center that needs a significant upgrade — now approved — or risk losing major moneymakers like Comic-Con, which attracts 130,000 attendees.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom are visiting E3 this week to try to keep the show in the city.

Gallagher stressed that the ESA is keeping its options open. “We have to make sure we’re looking at all the options and we are and there are several. E3 is a world class show that deserves a world class venue. Other venues are ready to go right now.”

It won’t be easy for E3 to move since Los Angeles is a major media market and has an airport that makes travel for the show’s 50,000 attendees from around the world fairly easy.

Yet, the number of hotels and available hotel rooms around the convention center have been cited as an issue for attendees, as has parking and restaurants.

One thing that won’t change is the time on the calendar when E3 takes place.

“We wouldn’t move the date of the show because there’s a rhythm in how things are developed in a large segment of the industry,” Gallagher said.

While the show once took place during the Consumer Electronics Show in January, “the industry has found a sweet spot where the content is best able to be shown to the world in a quality way that fits the development schedule.”

E3 also won’t start selling tickets to consumers anytime soon.

“In this venue, the sweet spot for attendees hovers around 45,000 to 50,000 attendees, Gallagher said. “We’re already at that number. Adding consumers would be too much. If E3 was to evolve and go to another venue, those questions would be revisited anew, but we will not jeopardize the production value … the quality of the experience and the value of E3 in that process.”

Gallagher added that E3 is more accessible to consumers than ever, because of digital technologies. “It’s available on every platform, Twitch is our streaming partner … you have 50 billion media impressions off the show. It’s hard to say the consumer isn’t present at E3.”

Sigourney Weaver will return for ‘Avatar’ sequels

Sigourney Weaver will return to "Avatar," but likely not as the Na'vi she played in the original.

It’s on! James Cameron has confirmed that he and Sigourney Weaver will collaborate again for the planned “Avatar” sequels.

“Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made ‘Aliens.’ We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together, so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the ‘Avatar’ sequels,” Cameron said in a statement.

The director continued, “Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration.”

Word of Weaver’s return to Pandora has been going around for a few years already. She told ComingSoon.net in September 2011, “Don’t worry, I will be back. Jim says no one ever dies in science fiction. He’s told me stories for the next two movies and I have to say that they’re absolutely wonderful and there’s a real treat in store. Now we just have to make them.”

Just how a dead character would resurface in the “Avatar” films isn’t clear, but Cameron told New York in 2011, “Have you ever heard of non-linear storytelling? A lot happens on that planet before she shows up, and before Jake shows up to join her. She’s there for 15 years ahead of time. I don’t know, but I wouldn’t jump to conclusions.”

And since Weaver will be playing a new character in the sequels, resurrecting Grace may not even be an issue for the sequels.

“Avatar 2,” “Avatar 3” and “Avatar 4” don’t have official titles yet, but have expected release dates in December 2016 and December 2017 for the first two, and some time in 2018 for the third sequel.

The original film, released in December 2009 is the No. 1 grossing movie of all time, and earned nearly $2.8 billion worldwide.

In “Constantine,” based on the comic book series “Hellblazer,” seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine specializes in giving hell… hell. Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he fights the good fight – or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he’s decided to leave his do-gooder life behind. But when demons target Liv, the daughter of one of Constantine’s oldest friends, he’s reluctantly thrust back into the fray – and he’ll do whatever it takes to save her. Before long, it’s revealed that Liv’s “second sight,” an ability to see the worlds behind our world and predict supernatural occurrences, is a threat to a mysterious new evil that’s rising in the shadows. And now it’s not just Liv who needs protection; the angels are starting to get worried too. So, together, Constantine and Liv must use her power and his skills to travel the country, find the demons that threaten our world – and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.

From Executive Producer David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Rises) and director Neil Marshall (“Game of Thrones,” The Descent) comes a dark new thriller that proves fighting evil is a hell of a job. The series stars Matt Ryan, Lucy Griffiths, Harold Perrineau and Charles Halford.

“Constantine” premieres October 24 on NBC.
