As revealed by Predator 4 co-writer Fred Dekker on Facebook, the script for the next installment of the long-running sci-fi/action franchise is in. While 2010’s would-be reboot, Predators, produced by Robert Rodriguez and directed by Nimrod Antal, grossed over $120 million worldwide off a $40 million budget, and received not-terrible reviews from critics (a victory for this kind of film), the fan excitement just wasn’t there. Terminator Sequel Removed from Paramount Schedule
It has been a busy day for release date swaps. Following this morning’s shift of Star Wars: Episode VIII to December 2017, Paramount Pictures has set their big screen Baywatch film for release on May 19, 2017. That’s a date that the studio previously had earmarked for a followup to last year’s Terminator Genisys. The future of the franchise is now uncertain as plans for new Terminator sequel installments have been removed from the studio schedule. Continue reading

Is Dan Trachtenberg’s The Cellar, now titled 10 Cloverfield Lane, a secret Cloverfield sequel?
Moviegoers attending the first screenings of Michael Bay’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi tonight found a true surprise preceding the film in the form of a trailer for director Dan Trachtenberg‘s upcoming Paramount Pictures thriller. The film, formerly known as first The Cellar and later Valencia, is now being released under the title 10 Cloverfield Lane and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher, Jr. What’s more, there’s a heavy implication that the March 11 release is secretly the long-awaited sequel to Matt Reeves’ 2008 hit Cloverfield. Ridley Scott Says Alien Covenant Will Have a ‘Pretty Hard R’ Rating
Work is already underway on Ridley Scott’s upcoming return to the world of Alien. Following a Golden Globe (Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical(?!?)) win for The Martian, Scott is off to Australia to begin production on the upcoming Alien: Covenant. Speaking backstage, Scott revealed a few details about his plans for the picture, including the fact that he’s shooting for “a pretty hard R” rating. Netflix Working on New ‘Voltron,’ Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Trollhunters’
Netflix’s plan to double its original content by 2016 proved undoubtedly ambitious, and it seems DreamWorks Animation may help it happen. The two have partnered up to add some major names to Netflix’s original programming slate, including a new Voltron series, as well as Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters project. According to Variety, the new agreement between Netflix and DreamWorks will add both a number of original series and the studio’s feature films, as well as DreamWorks content to markets outside China. Among the new series, Netflix is said to be developing a “re-imagining” of the Voltron property, as well as del Toro’s Trollhunters, which “will unleash a new, fantastical world wrapped around two best friends who make a startling discovery beneath their hometown.” Not only that, but the deal also expands the marketplace for existing series The Adventures of Puss in Boots, Dinotrux, and Dragons: Race to the Edge, while new series will be developed off DreamWorks movies, past, present and future.Guillermo del Toro has his ladle in enough enough stews to give Trollhunters a unique flavor, but what should we expect from a new Voltron series?
Will Smith Talks Steven Hiller’s Fate Before Independence Day: Resurgence
Even though we’ve known Will Smith bowed out of the sequel for a while now, when 20th Century Fox revealed the first trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence, many fans who don’t read the trades were probably wondering where the star was. Later, a viral website detailing the alternate history of the Earth in the wake of the first film revealed Smith’s character, Steven Hiller, had perished between the two films. Although director Roland Emmerich had previously blamed everything from Smith’s asking price to his overwhelming star power to his reluctance to return to sci-fi due to After Earth bombing, the Fresh Prince has now gone on record to Yahoo! on why he doesn’t appear and how he feels about the fate of his character. James Cameron Gives AVATAR 2 Update and Confirms Release and Shooting Dates
After all these years of knowing that an Avatar sequel was on the way, director James Cameron has yet to shoot it. He’s basically been preparing the film for production this whole time. In that time, the anticipation for any kind of Avatar sequel has waned to the point of almost being non-existant.
While talking to the Montreal Gazette, Cameron confirmed when the movie will be released, when he plans to start shooting it, and what he’s accomplished in the last two years of development. Continue reading
James Cameron wants to prove Avatar success wasn’t ‘some big fluke’
James Cameron is willing to admit more than a touch of performance anxiety the second time around.
His last film as a director, Avatar, scored nine Oscar nominations and grossed more than $2.7 billion around the globe – a record-setting amount of money that ushered in a new era of 3-D blockbusters.
But Avatar experienced a fairly torturous journey to screen, with studio bosses second-guessing Cameron’s technological demands, cost over-runs, and production delays. Its distributor, Twentieth Century Fox, almost backed out on a deal to make the movie at all.
Six years later, however, and Cameron is in the midst of ironing out the kinks on screenplays for second, third, and fourth installments of Avatar. “I’m in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now,” Cameron told EW during a recent phone interview. “Just refining. That’s in parallel with the design process. The design process is very mature at this point. We’ve been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much [set].”
So given that the hardest parts of research and development are already squared away, has the prospect of bringing a new installment to the screen gotten any easier this time around?
“No,” Cameron said, laughing. “Because you have to challenge yourself. Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn’t just some big fluke the first time. So we’ve got to deliver. I’ve created a nice rod for my own back, so they say.”

Looks like Star Trek Beyond will use the popularity of Star Wars: The Force Awakens to give itself a little boost of excitement. THR is reporting that the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond will be attached to The Force Awakens, along with Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse, and maybe Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.
