Lionsgate has signed Michael Gracey to direct an adaptation of the popular Japanese manga series “Naruto.”

The studio is in negotiations for the film rights to the “Naruto” series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, first published in 1997. The manga, which has sold more than 200 million copies in print, follows adolescent ninja Naruto Uzumaki, who dreams of becoming the village ninja, the community’s protector and leader.

Avi Arad and his son Ari Arad are producing through Arad Productions. Erik Feig, Geoff Shaveitz and Kelly O’Malley will oversee for the studio.

“Naruto” has generated an anime series in Japan that premiered in 2002 and lasted 220 episodes, while the “Naruto: Shippuden” sequel has been airing since 2007. In addition to the anime series, Studio Pierrot has developed 10 movies.

Gracey is a former visual effects specialist who has moved into directing. He’s been attached to several studio projects that are in development — Universal’s adaptation of the New York Times best-seller “Daughter of Smoke and Bone,” his Elton John biopic, Rocketman, with Tom Hardy attached and Fox’s P.T. Barnum biopic, The Greatest Showman on Earth.

Robert Rodriguez Says JOHNNY QUEST Will Be a Legit Action Adventure Movie

A couple of months ago we learned that Robert Rodriguez will be directing a live-action adaptation of the classic 1964 cartoon series Johnny Quest. This is going to be a different kind of project for the filmmaker. He’s made kid films before, but this isn’t going to be the same silly kind of kids movies that he’s made in the past. While talking to /Film he said that his Johnny Quest is going to be a legit action adventure film. Continue reading

‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper Dies at 61 From Cardiac Arrest

Wrestling legend “Rowdy” Roddy Piper has died at the age of 61… TMZ Sports has learned.

Roddy Toombs, best known for portraying “Rowdy” Roddy Piper in both the former WWF and WCW, is dead at the age of 61 according to a TMZ report. He died from cardiac arrest in his sleep at his home in Hollywood at around noon Friday. He was central to the explosion of WWF’s popularity, with his feuds against Hulk Hogan and Mr. T playing prominent roles in the creation of the first Wrestlemania and its 1986 sequel. WWE inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2005.

Piper was a wrestling icon — one of the biggest stars in the WWE back in the ’80s, and even wrestled in “Wrestlemania I” back in 1985 … squaring off against Hulk Hogan and Mr. T.

He was also the star of the criminally underrated 1988 sci-fir horror film, They Live. Continue reading

Like many of you, I was so sad to hear that Disney shut down Tron 3. The movie was on the verge of being greenlit, and all of a sudden from out of nowhere Disney decided not to move forward with it.

During an interview with /Film, Tron star Bruce Boxleitner talks about the third film being cancelled and said:

“I don’t really care anymore. I’m done with it. I’ve moved on. I hate to say that but it’s been too up and down for me. I would rather not just keep going. I don’t want to repeat my career anymore. That’d be like, ‘Let’s reboot Scarecrow and Mrs. King.’ No, I’m not interested. Or Babylon 5.”

Marvel Will Release a New Netflix Show Every 6 Months

MARVEL'S DAREDEVILThough the next Marvel film, Captain America: Civil War, won’t premiere until May, more Marvel heroes are coming to your streaming queue—and soon. Netflix announced at the Television Critics Association summer meeting on Tuesday that it will be rolling out a new Marvel superhero series every six months.

Marvel and Netflix teamed up to bring five separate shows to the streaming service, focusing on a group of comic book heroes called The Defenders, a street-level Avengers team. The first in the series, Daredevil, premiered in April. Jessica Jones will be the next superhero to get a Netflix treatment before the end of 2015, followed by Iron Fist and Luke Cage, according to the Associated Press. After each has starred in their own series, all four will join forces for a Defenders show.

The announcement comes as anticipation for Jessica Jones, the first female superhero to headline her own Marvel project, grows. “I’ve been coming to Comic-Con for 12 years, and I think a lot of fans here have been eager to see more women onscreen for a long time,” Dawn Keiser, a 30-year-old Californian told TIME at San Diego Comic-Con in early July. “I was really happy to see the characters Karen and Claire become these heroes on Daredevil, but I really can’t wait for Jessica Jones to be the hero of her own show.”

Krysten Ritter, star of Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23, will portray the first major female character with superpowers in a Marvel Studios project. Though Captain America character Peggy Carter stars in a 1940s-set Agent Carter on ABC, she has no powers—nor does Black Widow, the only female Avenger in the films. The first Marvel female superhero movie, Captain Marvel, won’t hit screens until 2018.

If the tone of Daredevil is any indication, Jessica Jones and the other Marvel Netflix shows will be much darker and bloodier than the one audiences know from films like Iron Man and The Avengers.
