It’s been over six long years since TRON: Legacy hit theaters, and the last time we heard anything about a follow-up, it was Walt Disney Pictures pulling the plug on it in May of 2015, shortly after the failure of Tomorrowland. However, Collider just hosted a special IMAX screening of Legacy with director Joseph Kosinski in attendance, and the filmmaker gave away some TRON 3 story ideas he had before the studio took it off the grid. It Sounds Like There’s a Chance That TRON 3 Isn’t Actually Dead?

A few months ago, fans were met with the incredibly sad news that Tron 3 was no longer in development. Apparently, Tron Legacy star Garrett Hedlund hasn’t been notified that the movie isn’t happening. During an interview with Comicbook.com he was asked about the third chapter in the franchise, and this is what he said:

“I haven’t been told it’s totally dead. Ever since we did Legacy, we knew that to have another story follow it up, it had to be concrete and exciting. Disney needed to have the right story to go forward.”

Bruce Boxleitner Discusses TRON 3 Being Cancelled, Says He’s Moved On

Like many of you, I was so sad to hear that Disney shut down Tron 3. The movie was on the verge of being greenlit, and all of a sudden from out of nowhere Disney decided not to move forward with it.

During an interview with /Film, Tron star Bruce Boxleitner talks about the third film being cancelled and said:

“I don’t really care anymore. I’m done with it. I’ve moved on. I hate to say that but it’s been too up and down for me. I would rather not just keep going. I don’t want to repeat my career anymore. That’d be like, ‘Let’s reboot Scarecrow and Mrs. King.’ No, I’m not interested. Or Babylon 5.”

It’s Game Over for TRON 3

Walt Disney Pictures will not be moving forward with plans for TRON 3.

Although previous reports suggested that Walt Disney Pictures had plans to move forward with TRON 3, The Hollywood Reporter now brings word that the planned return to the Grid will not be happening. Both Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were set to reprise their respective roles as Sam Flynn and Quorra, with TRON: Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski back at the helm. Sadly, the studio has elected not to go into production on the sequel. At least for the time being, the future of the TRON franchise has been derezed. Continue reading
