To say MacGruber is one of the best movies based on a Saturday Night Live sketch isn’t that big of a compliment, but it’s also one of the funniest, most ridiculous action movies in the past five years. Perhaps appropriately, given its hero’s (hilarious) lack of ability to avert explosions in the sketch, the movie bombed at the box office, but it gained a cult following on home video. MEN IN BLACK Being Rebooted as a New Trilogy
Men in Black is a trilogy that probably should have just ended after the original movie. The third film was better than the second one, but still — it didn’t seem like the filmmakers really had much to say after the first movie, which was more of a star vehicle for Will Smith and a showcase for what, at the time, were pretty impressive special effects.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, MIB producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald confirmed that not only is there a reboot in the works, but there are bigger plans for the franchise to continue on:
You produced Men in Black. Has there been talk of reviving that franchise with the new Sony regime?
PARKES: We’re in the middle of it. It’s very active.
Is Will Smith going to be part of it?
PARKES: Most likely no.
MACDONALD: It will be reinvented as a trilogy.
THR failed to ask them whether this newly reinvented trilogy would be the potential crossover with the 21 Jump Street movies, but I’m sure Sony wouldn’t think twice about linking both of those franchises together if it meant they could make money on three more films. Alone, Men in Black and Jump Street sequels probably wouldn’t do that well (the current narratives of both have been played out), but combined, curiosity might be enough to get people to come see what the heck a crossover between them would look like. If development is indeed “very active,” we should probably be hearing something about this in an official capacity from Sony soon.
Remakes of ACE VENTURA, THE EXORCIST, and MAJOR LEAGUE are on the way
Morgan Creek Productions has put its library of 78 films up for sale, and if the deal goes through with a potential buyer, the production company is set to retain the remake rights to Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Major League, The Exorcist, Young Guns, and Flying Tigers.
I’m sure you can see where this is heading. Morgan Creek’s CEO told Deadline that they’re selling the rights to the library in order to make money to fund more movies, but it seems like at least some of those movies will be remakes of Ace Ventura, The Exorcist, and Major League; of the five available options, those are the three currently in development there.

Dolph Lundgren starring in Kindergarten Cop 2
There’s a new Kindergarten Cop in town.
EW has confirmed that Swedish actor and martial artist Dolph Lundgren is starring in Kindergarten Cop 2, filling Arnold Schwarzenegger’s shoes in the straight-to-DVD sequel from Universal’s 1440 Entertainment.
Schwarzenegger and Lundgren worked together on 2010’s The Expendables, and Lundgren has a stack of tough-guy roles on his resume, including his vulgar and volatile Expendables character Gunner Jensen and rival boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. Manly Movie broke the news Thursday, sharing photos of Lundgren on set in Vancouver. Continue reading

Universal Pictures have provided Latino-Review with the one-sheet for “Ride Along 2.”
Kevin Hart and Ice Cube lead the returning lineup of Ride Along 2, the sequel to the blockbuster action-comedy that gave us the year’s most popular comedy duo.

‘Bad Boys 3’, and a Fourth Is On the Way!
The streets have been clamoring for a Bad Boys threequel for a decade now, ever since Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, and Michael Bay colluded to make one of the best action films of all time (Bad Boys 2, of course). As Michael Bay moved on to robots, Will fell back, and Martin fell off, it began to seem like a pipe dream. But now, not only is Bad Boys 3 really, truly happening, there’s also a fourth right behind it. Long live Hollywood’s franchise thirst. First an ensemble film and now yet another sequel, Will sure is taking strides to get out of his career rut, isn’t he?
Not to be a Debbie Downer, but there is one thing casting a cloud over this otherwise exciting news, though: Michael Bay’s relative non-involvement. Say what you will, but when the man is at his best he makes things explode like no other. It’s not hyperbole to count him equal to Will and Martin as a key factor in what makes the first two films macho-action classics. Joe Carnahan (Narc, Smokin Aces, The Grey) is already attached to direct BB3. Hopefully he’ll do a fine job honoring the magic that came before him. But please, for the love of sun-soaked, high-octane shootout climaxes, let the Hollywood stars align to bring Bay back for 4. Fingers crossed. Anyway, if Sony’s dates stick, expect Bad Boys 3 February 2017 and Bad Boys 4 July 2019.
Paul Feig Unveils First Official GHOSTBUSTERS Cast Photo
Earlier this morning, an unauthorized paparazzi shot of the ladies of Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters was making the rounds, so Feig did the right thing and went ahead and released an official shot of his cast in full costume.
Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig, and Kate McKinnon look great in their updated outfits (and a much nicer Ecto-1 than the one we saw earlier this week). I know a lot of people are still angry that this movie is happening, but I have a feeling it’s going to be a lot of fun.
