The Walking Dead recap: 3 things you might have missed in “A”

And so we come to the final Walking Dead recap of the season. We’ve got a lot to get through – and most of it’s violent – so shall we begin? Obviously lots of spoilers from here on out.

The Claimers really were the Marauders

We called it last week and so it came to pass. One of the most brutal and iconic scenes from The Walking Dead comic was adapted for the season finale. The characters might have changed but the result was the same.

For the Marauders we instead got the Claimers; in Abraham’s place we got Michonne. What didn’t change was the controversial storyline: Carl almost got raped before Rick took swift and bloody revenge by first ripping out Joe’s throat and then savagely mutilating the monster who tried to assault his son.

Showrunner – and episode writer – Scott Gimple, revealed that the comic book was on set for the shooting of that scene and there were parts of it which were lifted directly from the page.

The setting was almost exactly the same: deserted road; abandoned car; nighttime; gun to the head.

There were even complete lines of dialogue which made it from page to screen, especially the final embrace between Rick and Joe:

“What you gonna do now?” the savage asks dumbly. Well, I think he’ll start by ripping your throat out thank you very much:

Rick got a taste for neck
Rick got a taste for neck
Joe got more than a hickey
Joe got more than a hickey

But it is the final panel of the scene that is my favorite and one the show directly adapted. It shows Carl, head cradled, starring impassively at his would-be rapist while his father eviscerates him.

Carl refused to look away
Carl refused to look away
Will he ever be the same again?
Will he ever be the same again?

The repercussions of this brutality will be felt far and wide…

Terminus is home to cannibals

We all suspected Terminus was home to some unsavory characters and our worst fears were confirmed when Rick and the gang were taken hostage after being led on a deadly dance through the charnel house.

The true motivations of the residence of Terminus were not revealed, but there were enough clues in the episode for us to be fairly certain Gareth and his buddies have a taste for human flesh.

Let’s look at the evidence:

  • Gareth – the leader of Terminus – has more than a passing resemblance to Chris, the leader of the cannibalistic Hunters in the comic.

  • When Alex was asked why they take people in, he responded:

…people become a part of us, we get stronger. It’s why we put up the signs, take people in. It’s how we survive.

  • This cage of human remains is pretty conclusive evidence

  • The cattle trucks full of screaming people. Keeping them alive ensures the meat stays fresh. Also, dead people turn into walkers, which in turn would result in tainted meat.

Rick Grimes is the one who knocks

This is less something you might’ve missed but more something that’s so awesome it needs repeating.

Decisive, aggressive, dangerous: Rick is back and it looks like he’s here to stay. From farmhand to slayer, it’s good to see Rick re-embrace his darker side. Just a shame it took the almost-rape of his son for him to get there.

Still, better late than never and the ‘Termites’ will feel pretty stupid when they find out they’re screwing with the wrong group. (A variation on this line was delivered by Rick in the comics before engaging the Hunters in battle.)

Points for discussion

The flashback scenes reminded me how much I liked Hershel, but also how relieved I am that we’re no longer at the prison.

Carol, Tyreese and Judith are on the way to Terminus. Will they get caught in the trap?

Seeing Daryl and Rick back together was a beautiful thing.

Promo for NBC’s ROSEMARY’S BABY

http://static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/t/533d8daee4b047d0e06ca223/1396542896964/promo-trailer-for-nbcs-rosemarys-baby?format=750wNBC has released another promo for their adaptation of Ira Levin‘s novel, Rosemary’s Baby. The miniseries stars Zoe Saldana, Patrick J. Adams, and Jason Isaacs. I’m a big fan of this nightmarish story and the film that was directed by Roman Polanski. It looks like this series will be a solid adaptation.

Rosemary is the iconic young wife and would-be mother who, with her husband, moves into a Paris apartment that has a darkly storied past. After finally getting pregnant, she becomes increasingly suspicious that both her husband and their mysterious neighbors have ulterior motives about the future of her child.

A GOONIES Sequel is Going to Happen! Richard Donner is 1000% Certain

http://static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/t/53403cc4e4b063017f7a5715/1396718792717/a-goonies-sequel-is-going-to-happen-richard-donner-is-1000-certain?format=750w

According to director Richard Donner a sequel to The Goonies is going to happen! This is something I’ve wanted to see happen for as long as I can remember, ever since I watched the first film when I was kid in 1986. I don’t know why it took so long to actually get a sequel into development, but after all these years and all the rumors, it sounds like it’s finally going to happen.

When asked by TMZ if he was going to make another comic book movie, the filmmaker replied with, “If you call ‘Goonies’ a comic book. We’re doing a sequel.”

He went on to say that he hopes to get the entire original cast back which includes actors such as Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Jeff Cohen and Martha Plimpton. Donner didn’t say whether the film will follow the gang 28 years later or feature them in smaller side roles. I hope that it takes the gang on another fun and crazy adventure though. I don’t want to see a Goonies movie that focuses on their kids, but of course that is a possibility.

For those of you who doubt this news, Donner went on to solidify it saying,

“It will happen. I’m 1000 percent certain there will be a sequel. I will bet my children on it.”

Below you’ll find a photo of the cast and crew of the original film all grown up.http://static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/t/53403d29e4b065254d706f56/1396718902884/a-goonies-sequel-is-going-to-happen-richard-donner-is-1000-certain1?format=750w

JEM — Live-Action Movie Video Updates

https://i2.wp.com/static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/t/533f3840e4b05fdb12d82730/1396652098230/JEM_by_AlexAmezcua.jpg?resize=301%2C440

Director John M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Step Up franchise), music consultant Scooter Braun, and producer Jason Blum (Insidious and Paranormal Activity) are reaching out to fans of Jem to get involved in its creative process. They are also doing an Internet powered casting call for people who are a triple threat (sing, dance, act). Because 3 dudes making a movie based on a campy ’80s cartoon based on a toy targeted at girls seemed weird, the second video highlights the women making the film, like producer Jessica L. Hall (Sinister and Insidious: Chapter 2).

Even with creator of Jem Christy Marx calling foul on the movie’s production (read more on that at io9), most fans are still pretty excited that it’s even being made. They are moving on the production pretty quickly, so if you would like to be involved, go to the official Jem The Movie site.

Chiwetel Ejiofor Up for Villain Role in BOND 24

http://static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/t/533f9e67e4b0600fcd356c66/1396678248471/?format=750w

MGM and Sony Pictures is looking to cast Oscar-nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, as the main villain in Bond 24. He was recently nominated for his role in 12 Years A Slave. According to Variety he is the studio’s top choice, but as of right now no offer has been made.

Ejiofor would make an incredible villain in the Bond series! This wouldn’t be his first time playing a bad guy either. He was awesome as the villain in Joss Whedon‘s Serenity, as well as in Children of Men and Four Brothers. He’s definitely got what it takes to play such a sinister role.

The plan is for Sam Mendes to start shooting the film in the summer. The script was written by John Logan.

The report also says that the studio is looking for a Scandinavian woman and a British woman to play the new Bond girls.

STAR WARS EPISODE VII Is Already Shooting and Casting Is Almost Complete

http://static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/t/534197dde4b081d168e62281/1396807649088/star-wars-episode-vii-is-already-shooting-and-casting-almost-complete?format=750w

Disney Chief Alan Horn has confirmed that Star Wars: Episode VII is already shooting, and that most of the cast is in place. He revealed this bit of news during an interview with THR’s Stephen Galloway at Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television in Los Angeles. He said the casting has been one of the hardest parts of it, but adds

“We have a lot of them [in place]. We’re just not completely done yet.”

I assume we can expect an official casting announcement from the studio very soon. It’s going to be really cool to see who is coming back from the original series and who the new cast will be. I trust that J.J. Abrams will bring fans a cast that they will be happy with. I think Star Wars is in good hands, and I have confidence in what Abrams is creating.

When asked if the script was complete, Horn said, “It actually is now.” As we reported earlier, the script that Michael Arndt wrote for the film had some issues and needed some changes. So Abrams stepped in with Lawrence Kasdan to do some rewrites to fix things. It looks like everyone is happy with what they did with it. Horn emphasized the importance of the script saying,

“It’s all about the screenplay. It has to be screenplay, screenplay, screenplay.”

You can watch the Star Wars part of the interview below. It’s really excited to hear that the film is actually in production. I can’t wait to actually start seeing stuff from it! The movie is set to be released in theaters on December 18th, 2015.

The Russo Brothers Talk CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 – Release Date Confirmed

http://static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/t/5342ba4ee4b0cf4885e88a58/1396882002431/the-russo-brothers-talks-captain-america-3?format=750w
Captain America
: The Winter Soldier
directors Joe and Anthony Russo were recently guests on the Empire Podcast. They discussed their film, which is currently in theaters, and also talked about where they are on Captain America 3. (Disney and Marvel have also confirmed that the movie will be released on May 6th, 2016, pitting it against Batman Vs. Superman.)

The Winter Soldier was such an amazing film, I can only imagine how incredible the next one will be. During the podcast they give an update on the progress on the third film saying that that there have been a lot of discussions with writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and that they have a general idea on the direction that they will take Captain America 3.

If you’ve already seen The Winter Solider, then it shouldn’t come as a surprise to you that the third film will focus on Steve Rogers’ best friend, Bucky.

“The most that we can say about it at this point, is that Bucky’s story is not finished. It’s an introduction to Bucky’s story. So if you want to guess at what that movie will be about..you can assume this will be a continuation of that story”

One of our readers, Dave S, gave a pretty solid suggestion as to what we might see happen in the next film. When talking about The Winter Soldier in the comment section of the review I wrote he said,

“This film also sets up the inevitable “Death of Captain America” storyline…especially with Emily VanCamp being introduced, first as Kate/Agent 13, but ultimately as Sharon Carter (Peggy Carter’s niece), and Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow (aka: Crossbones). Combine that with Bucky/Winter Soldier starting to remember who he is and what his relationship with Steve/Cap was…and of course he’ll be the new Captain America.”

This is just speculation, but it does sound like it could be the direction Marvel takes this franchise. What would you like to see happen in Captain America 3? Click here to listen to the podcast.

STAR WARS: Episode VII — Peter Mayhew Returns as Chewbacca

https://i0.wp.com/static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/t/5343063ae4b056226a597c1e/1396901434464/peter-mayhew-in-star-wars--episode-iii-revenge-of-the-sith.jpg?resize=374%2C252

THR is reporting that Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in the original Star Wars trilogy, will reprise his role in Star Wars: Episode VII. This is great news to fans who have supported Mayhew (age 69) though his many recent health struggles. They can easily use a stunt man for the more physically demanding action that Mayhew would not be able to perform, because I imagine that Chewbacca suit is pretty heavy. Let’s hope we don’t get a CGI Chewbacca, which is a worry for several readers on Facebook.

With no official cast other than R2-D2, Star Wars: Episode VII face punches theaters December 15, 2015.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Movie Reboot Moves Forward

http://static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/t/53432c41e4b09af66109c354/1396911170777/?format=750w

Variety reports that Battlestar Galactica is getting a reboot at Universal. Around 2009 there were whispers of Bryan Singer developing a movie based on the series, but that never went beyond rumors. Creator of the original 1978 TV series Glen A. Larson is set to produce this new iteration. Jack Paglen, writer of of the underwhelming-looking Transcendence and possible writer of the Prometheus sequel, has signed on. It sounds like the 2003 series producer Ronald D. Moore is not involved, but who knows what details might emerge.

This reimagining of Battlestar Galactica with the original creator and an unproven writer is an intriguing combo so far. Thanks to a bigger budget and modern effects, the scope, scale, and action will easily be beyond what we’ve seen on TV. But can they create a successful 2 hour story for people who aren’t fans of either series run? This announcement is pretty early in the development process, so everything is subject to change.

DARK KNIGHT RETURNS “Real Action” Collectible Toy

The Dark Knight Returns is arguably one of the best comic story arcs in Batman history. Entertainment Earth has created a “Real Action” Collectible that truly recreates Frank Miller‘s aged and hardened version of Batman. This 12 inch figure is fully posable and has fabric clothing that covers up the joints for a more natural look.

You can pre-order this antihero for $170 on Entertainment Earth’s site.https://i1.wp.com/static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/53430d75e4b099c54d4cfa0d/53430d7de4b047d0e0710d5d/1396903294439/Real-Action-Hero-Dark-Knight-Returns-Batman.jpg?resize=354%2C354https://i0.wp.com/static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/53430d75e4b099c54d4cfa0d/53430d7be4b047d0e0710d59/1396903332725/Batman-RAH-Dark-Knight-Returns.jpg?resize=415%2C415https://i1.wp.com/static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/53430d75e4b099c54d4cfa0d/53430d7be4b00493c500fd03/1396903325184/Dark-Knight-Returns-Batman-Real-Action-Hero-Figure.jpg?resize=380%2C380
