I AM LEGEND Is Getting Rebooted

Warner Bros. has been trying to figure out a way to get a sequel for I Am Legend off the ground for years. Well, they’ve finally given up on that sequel and they are looking to just reboot the damn thing.

The news comes from Deadline, who says that the franchise reboot will not include Will Smith. The actor doesn’t seem very interested in doing any sequels these days anyway. He’s been dodging that Independence Day sequel for years.

The studio is basically taking an already existing spec script that they acquired earlier this year called A Garden At The End Of The World, and changing it up to fit the I Am Legend story. The script was written by Gary Graham, who worked at the Apple store in midtown Manhattan before his script was picked up.

The original script is described as “a sci-fi version of John Wayne’s The Searchers.” The studio executives and producers felt that there were enough similarities to the themes and mythology of I Am Legend in the script that they asked Graham to redraft the script so that it would fit the franchise.

That’s too bad. I would have much rather seen a movie made based on the original script than have it changed to fit a property that they want to reboot.

‘Star Wars’ Toy Documentary Launches on Vimeo Under Exclusive Digital Pact

star wars documentary plastic galaxyA documentary film covering three decades of “Star Wars” toy culture, “Plastic Galaxy,” is now available exclusively for digital rental and purchase from digital-video site Vimeo under a pact with Gravitas Ventures.

The 67-minute film features interviews with former employees of Kenner — the original “Star Wars” toy licensee — as well as experts, authors and collectors as it looks at the history of “Star Wars” action figures and other toys. Film is directed by Brian Stillman, who produced with Karl Tate under their X-Ray Films banner, and is distributed by Gravitas.

“Plastic Galaxy” is available from Vimeo for $4.99 for a 24-hour rental or $12.99 to purchase. The film also was released on DVD in January 2014.

The “Star Wars” franchise is now under the aegis of Disney, which acquired Lucasfilm in October 2012. J.J. Abrams is directing the next theatrical installment, “Star Wars: Episode VII,” set for Dec. 18, 2015, release. Among other efforts to mint coin from the space-opera brand, Disney is launching animated skein “Star Wars Rebels” Oct. 13 on cabler Disney XD, preceded by a one-hour film that aired Monday on Disney XD and will hit Disney Channel on Friday. Mouse House has already ordered a second season of “Star Wars Rebels.”

The “Plastic Galaxy” pickup is part of Vimeo’s recent efforts to secure exclusive windows for VOD content. Last fall, the IAC-owned vidsite hired Greg Clayman, who previously headed digital initiatives at News Corp and Viacom, as g.m. audience networks to cut deals with content creators.

‘Better Call Saul’ Gets 2015 Premiere, Early Season 2 Renewal

Bob Odenkirk as Saul in Breaking Bad Better Call Saul Gets 2015 Premiere, Early Season 2 Renewal

We’ve got both some good and bad news for fans of Breaking Bad‘s resident criminal lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk). First, the bad news. Contrary to previous reports, AMC’s spin-off/prequel series Better Call Saul will not in fact premiere in 2014. Instead, early 2015 has been chosen for Saul’s 10-episode debut season.

Now, the good news, which just might make up for the delay. Better Call Saul has already been renewed for a 13-episode second season, guaranteeing that fans will get to spend at least 23 more hours in Vince Gilligan’s twisted version of New Mexico.

While a specific premiere date has yet to be set, AMC has confirmed that Better Call Saul will be paired up with The Walking Dead (and its sister show Talking Dead) in both the first quarter of 2015 and the first quarter of 2016. Walking Dead’s usual pattern is airing 8 episodes from mid-October to early December, then airing 8 more episodes from mid-February to late March. This would put Saul’s likely debut date sometime in February 2015, possibly March at the latest.

On the surface, Better Call Saul doesn’t exactly seem like a natural partner for The Walking Dead. After all, the former is a comedic crime/legal drama, and the latter is a dark, grim, post-apocalyptic horror story. It’s hard to get much further apart in genre than that. That said, Walking Dead is the most watched scripted series in all of television among the prized 18-49 demographic. AMC would have to be nuts to not try and use that platform to promote Saul. Expect the network to run plenty of ads for Saul during the first half of Walking Dead’s fifth season, and maybe even have Odenkirk appear as a guest on Talking Dead. AMC clearly wants Saul to be a huge hit, and they have no bigger recruiting tool than Robert Kirkman’s zombie opus.

Jonathan Banks from Breaking Bad Joining Better Call Saul Better Call Saul Gets 2015 Premiere, Early Season 2 Renewal

Joining the always hilarious Odenkirk in Saul’s regular cast will be fellow Breaking Bad vet Jonathan Banks, reprising his role as professional fixer Mike Ehrmantraut. As if bringing back a fan favorite character wasn’t enough of a casting coup, also entering the mix is comedy veteran Michael McKean, who’ll play rival lawyer Dr. Thurber. Few comic actors can trade lines with Bob Odenkirk without being outclassed, but it can be easily argued that McKean is one of them. The rumor mill has also suggested that Aaron Paul will put in some type of appearance as Jesse Pinkman, although that has never been officially confirmed in any way by AMC.

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan is set to direct Better Call Saul’s first episode, and will then share showrunning duties with Peter Gould. That arrangement makes perfect sense, as while Gould created the Saul Goodman character during his time as a writer/producer for Breaking Bad, he has no experience holding the top job on a show. If year one goes well, don’t be surprised if Gilligan bows out completely, handing the reins fully over to Gould.

Breaking Bad was a cultural phenomenon quite unlike most cable dramas. Will Better Call Saul repeat its success? AMC better hope so, as they now have Saul Goodman’s services on retainer for the next two years.

Better Call Saul premieres in the first quarter of 2015. It has already been renewed for a second season.

SPIDER-MAN to be Rebooted Again with SINISTER SIX? VENOM Canceled? What?!

http://static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/t/54346897e4b03c75a8bfc6a2/1412720793188/spider-man-to-be-rebooted-again-with-sinister-six-venom-canceled-what?format=750w

Yesterday a rumor broke that Marvel and Sony Pictures were discussing the possibility of bringing Spider-Man into the Marvel cinematic universe. It looks like there’s even more to it than that. Badass Digest received some additional intel regarding the state of Spider-Man at the studio. Judging by this recent info, it seems like the studio isn’t sure what in the hell to do with the character. The site offers up three new bits of information on top of the whole Marvel rumor.

First up, there has been talk that studio is looking to reboot Spider-Man with the Sinister Six movie being developed by Drew Goddard.

“Sony is going to soft reboot Spider-Man with The Sinister Six, having a new actor playing a Spidey who works with the villains The Dirty Dozen style to take down a larger threat.”

Whoa! That’s a pretty big deal. Spider-Man is going to be the most rebooted superhero in history. That could be kind of cool movie, but it doesn’t seem like that would fit in with where they were taking the story in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The site then goes on to say that Spider-Man could be hanging up his Spidey suit for a few years.

“Sony is going to put Spider-Man on the shelf for four or five years and see if they can develop any of the side characters into their own franchises.”

What’s interesting about that is Spider-Man is the most interesting character in the Spider-Man universe. I can’t help but think the side characters aren’t really going to hit with audiences… unless that side character is Venom, but guess what?

“I’ve also heard that Venom is functionally dead again.”

Ugh. These are all rumors at the moment, but if they are true, it’s insane. If the studio doesn’t don’t know what to do with this character, they might as well let Marvel use him in their own universe. I think word of all this madness at Sony got back to Marvel and that’s when they jumped in to take advantage of the situation and see if they could make a deal.

I was never very crazy about  garfeild in this  role.  I know he is a fan and all and  really  trying b ut he just wasnt spiderman for me.  But  all these reboots are nuts!

First Trailer for JUSTICE LEAGUE: THRONE OF ATLANTIS

Animation has released the first full trailer for their upcoming animated film Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, and I think fans will like what it has to offer. Aquaman finally gets the spotlight in one of these films, and it looks like he kicks some ass.

As Orm and Black Manta make their move against the surface world after the battle with Apokolips forces in Justice League War had deadly consequences for Atlantis, the queen of the lost underwater civilization searches for her other son, Orm’s half brother Arthur. Living on the surface world with powers he doesn’t understand, Arthur Curry steps into his destiny as Aquaman, teaming with the Justice League to save and unite all people of the world.

The cast of the movie includes Matt Lanter (Aquaman), Sam Witwer (Orm/Ocean Master), Chris Gorham (The Flash), Jason O’Mara (Batman), Shemar Moore (Cyborg), Rosario Dawson (Wonder Woman), Jerry O’Connell (Superman), Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern), and Sean Astin (Shazam).

Has Stan Lee Been Playing the Same Character in Every Marvel Movie?

http://static.squarespace.com/static/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/t/542ac81ce4b07e544a6a2f47/1412089885186/has-stan-lee-been-playing-the-same-character-in-every-marvel-movie?format=750w

There’s an interesting and cool theory that I recently came across that suggests all of the cameos that Marvel co-founder Stan Lee has had in the Marvel movies could actually be the same character.

The cameos that Lee has made in all of these films over the years are meant to pay tribute to the man who created so many of these amazing characters. But, what if there was a little more to it than that?

The theory suggests that the Marvel cinematic version of Stan Lee is actually Uatu, also known as The Watcher, but in human form. Apparently, this theory has been floating around for awhile now, but I just came across it over on Cinemablend.

For those of you not familiar with The Watcher, he was created by Lee and Jack Kirby in the early 1960s. He’s one of the oldest beings in the Marvel Universe, and is part of a race that watches over and observes the universe. The character records everything that happens, and he’s specifically assigned to watch over the events of Earth, but he doesn’t involve himself in its affairs.

This would explain why Lee’s character happens to be around all of the superhero action in the cinematic universe. Now, we know the character is assigned to specifically watch over the events of Earth, so how do we explain Lee’s appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy? Well, he’s obviously keeping his eye on Peter Quill, who is from Earth, and he knows that he has an important future role in the universe and what happens to Earth.

One of the coolest parts about this theory is that in a very small way it establishes a multiverse that connects all of the Marvel franchises that Lee has appeared in. That means even though separate studios own certain rights to different characters, there is still a connection within the cinematic universe.

New Superhero T-Shirts Latest in a Long Line of Sexist Licensed Products from DC AND Marvel

I’m not entirely sure who is making the decisions when it comes to licensing at DC Entertainment, but recently two somewhat controversial shirts have appeared at retail outlets, and it’s safe to say most people aren’t very happy with them.  The first shirt was revealed on the DC Women Kicking Ass page, which features an image of Superman and his now-girlfriend Wonder Woman locked in a mid-air kiss from the cover of Justice League #12, with art by Jim Lee.

It’s already an older image, so why all the hubbub now? Well, you can thank a couple of modifications made to the original image just for this t- shirt that take the whole thing to a new, sexist level. Now there’s a caption above the image that says “SCORE!” and another that says “Superman Does It Again!” reducing his relationship with Wonder Woman to a hook up at a frat party. All that’s missing is Superman sporting a propped collar, a backwards baseball cap, and Batman appearing somewhere to the side giving Clark a high five on a job well done.

tumblr_inline_ncmrri9y331qbujox

Maybe the most offensive thing about the shirt isn’t the captions (though they’re bad), it’s the changes made to the original art. In the original Jim Lee cover image, Wonder Woman has Superman tied up in her lasso, the suggestion being that it was she who snagged him, not the other way around. Maybe the shirt manufacturers  thought that men wouldn’t wear a shirt that suggested that a woman was the sexually dominant one, and had the lasso removed. But at the end of the day, DC and/or Warner Brothers had to approve it. The whole thing is pretty gross, and the most shocking thing is that DC thought that they could put this out there and that no one would care or notice.

2012-08-23-justice-league12

The second shirt, revealed via a blog called PJ Says, is one that was discovered while shopping at WalMart in the juniors section. All in hot pink writing, it features the bat symbol and the words “Training to be Batman’s Wife.” (The word “wife” is in cursive, because reasons.) Why not “Training to Be Batgirl,” or Batwoman? Or even training to be Batman’s partner?? (Which has a double meaning, if you happen to be one of the many women who find Bruce Wayne attractive.) Nope, this shirt instead is telling young women and girls that you shouldn’t fantasize about being a hero yourself, just the hero’s wife.

The author of the original blog post sums it up pretty well: “F–k being Batman’s wife. I want to be Batman. I want to wear a skintight bat suit the color of dark justice. I want a utility belt. I want to drive an impossibly fast car or a tricked out motorcycle. I want to save people. I want to be the biggest badass in Gotham. I want to be talking to someone at a boring party at the mayor’s house, see the bat signal over someone’s shoulder, and say ‘Excuse me. Someone’s calling me.’”

IMG_20140821_193544-375x500

DC has officially responded to the criticism, giving an official response to Comic Book Resources, saying “DC Comics is home to many of the greatest male and female Super Heroes in the world. All our fans are incredibly important to us, and we understand that the messages on certain t-shirts are offensive. We agree. Our company is committed to empowering boys and girls, men and women, through our characters and stories. Accordingly, we are taking a look at our licensing and product design process to ensure that all our consumer products reflect our core values and philosophy.” While it’s nice to see DC admit that these products are offensive, the real question remains: will they really change what products they approve moving forward, or is this all just PR?

Superheroes and superhero images are everywhere, thanks to the huge presence they have in popular culture these days. But outside of movies, it’s clothing and other licensed product that really convey what these characters are supposed to represent to the mainstream, and in particular, young people. (I wish it were comics, but its not.)  Walk into any Target for example, and you’ll see tons of items with the Justice League characters on them (they recently signed a licensing deal for Justice League products with DC). But if those clothes/toys/school supplies are aimed at young boys, then the image of Wonder Woman is almost always removed from the team line-up, even if she is more famous as a name brand than either Green Lantern or the Flash.

By doing this, you are instilling the idea in young boys’ minds that female heroes are not to be admired or looked up to, much less have their images displayed on their clothing. And this isn’t a DC issue alone; Marvel got tons of heat for not featuring the character of Gamora on many licensed Guardians of the Galaxy items, and last year had a t-shirt for girls that said “I Need A Hero,” while shirts for boys (albeit young boys) had phrases like “Be A Hero.” Neither DC nor Marvel create the sexism in our culture, it’s already there, and in fact, in the comics themselves female characters are often portrayed as just as (or more) powerful and capable as the men. But these companies need to be sure that is the image they project when being licensed out, otherwise they’re simply not doing their job, and all those strong female characters in the comics and even in the movies will be for nothing.

Netflix Signs Adam Sandler to Exclusive Four-Movie Deal

Adam Sandler

Netflix’s movie-deal machinery isn’t slowing down: The Internet-video service has inked a pact with Adam Sandler to star in and produce four films to be available exclusively on Netflix worldwide.

The first movie under the pact could arrive as soon as 2015. Sandler’s Happy Madison Prods. will work with Netflix to develop the four films — presumably comedies, although the genres aren’t set in stone. The Netflix deal does not cover Sandler’s current studio film commitments.

News comes after Netflix earlier this week announced an unusual deal with the Weinstein Co. to release “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” the same day it’s released in IMAX theaters; major U.S. exhibitors, however, have said they will not show the film because of the Netflix arrangement.

Sandler’s films have grossed about $3.9 billion worldwide at the box office. According to Netflix, he’s among the few actors whose movies consistently rank among the most-viewed by subscribers in the U.S. and in other its other regions, ranging from Brazil to the U.K.

“When these fine people came to me with an offer to make four movies for them, I immediately said ‘yes’ for one reason and one reason only… Netflix rhymes with ‘wet chicks,’” Sandler said in a prepared statement. “Let the streaming begin!”

Sandler joined NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” as a writer in 1990 and became featured player the following year. He went on to star in, produce and write numerous films, including “The Wedding Singer,” “The Waterboy,” “The Longest Yard,” “Big Daddy,” “Anger Management,” “50 First Dates,” “Click,” “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,” “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan,” “Grown Ups” and “Grown Ups 2.”

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said Sandler’s appeal “spans across viewers of all ages — everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line — not just in the U.S. but all over the world.”

Sandler’s next two films are Jason Reitman’s “Men, Women & Children” and “The Cobbler,” both of which premiered at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival. Thesp also stars in Sony Pictures action-comedy “Pixels,” slated to bow July 24, 2015.
