Powerpuff Girls Returning With New Series on Cartoon Network

Sugar, spice and everything nice are coming back to Cartoon Network. That’s right, The Powerpuff Girls—Blossom, Buttercup and Bubbles—are returning for new adventures, Cartoon Network announced almost 10 years after the original series ended.

“The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide,” Rob Sorcher, chief content officer, Cartoon Network, said in a statement. “We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X.”

The pint-size superheroes were created by accident when Professor Utonium accidentally mixed Chemical X with sugar, spice and everything nice in an attempt to make perfect little girls.

The Powerpuff Girls debuted in 1998 and lasted until 2005. Cartoon Network aired a 10th anniversary special in 2009 and a new CGI TV movie in early 2014. Catherine Cavadini voiced Blossom, Tara Strong portrayed Bubbles and E.G. Daily voiced Buttercup in the original series.

The Powerpuff Girls are just one of many popular children properties returning to life. Disney recently announced The Lion Guard, a sequel series to The Lion King franchise following Simba’s young son. Meanwhile, Netflix and Scholastic Media are bringing The Magic School Bus back to life with a new series. It’s a growing trend in the space with shows like Arrested Development, The Comeback and Heroes also finding new life after cancellation.

New episodes of The Powerpuff Girls are set to debut in 2016.

Unproduced Jim Henson Story Coming to TV and Comics

Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl didn’t have time to produce all the scripts they wrote. One example is Tale of Sand; it was found in the Henson archives and adapted by Archaia into a graphic novel three years ago. Another example is the Thanksgiving-themed The Musical Monsters of Turkey Hollow. It was written by Henson and Juhl at some point in the 1960s and intended to be a television special. It never made it to the screen though and was found in the same archives where Tale of Sand was tucked away. Luckily, the turkey-filled story is getting a second chance.

USA Today revealed The Musical Monsters of Turkey Hollow script is headed to television and to the pages of comics. CEO of the Jim Henson Co. Lisa Henson states both adaptations “are incredibly close to the original treatment.” Henson is working with Archaia on the graphic novel, and it will be written and drawn by Roger Langridge.

Turkey Hollow Cover

The narrative sounds wacky in the best kind of way. It takes place during Thanksgiving in Turkey Hollow, New Hampshire in 1968. The town has 27 human residents and thousands of turkeys and also furry aliens who make musical sounds. The aliens befriend a boy named Timmy who plays the guitar, and drama ensues.

It sounds like there are plenty of interesting characters in the all-ages fairy tale as well as several creatures to admire. Lisa Henson gave Langridge reference photos of the Turkey Hollow alien puppets Jim Henson created back in 1968 so you know the art will have a Henson vibe.

A New Constantine Trailer Reveals the Show’s Ties to a Larger DC Universe

Following a first trailer and a first clip, NBC’s upcoming “Constantine” has brought online a new Canadian trailer. Check it out in the player below, courtesy of GlobalTV and be on the lookout for a famous artifact from the DC Comics universe!

In “Constantine,” based on the comic book series “Hellblazer,” seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine specializes in giving hell… hell. Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he fights the good fight – or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he’s decided to leave his do-gooder life behind. But when demons target Liv, the daughter of one of Constantine’s oldest friends, he’s reluctantly thrust back into the fray – and he’ll do whatever it takes to save her. Before long, it’s revealed that Liv’s “second sight,” an ability to see the worlds behind our world and predict supernatural occurrences, is a threat to a mysterious new evil that’s rising in the shadows. And now it’s not just Liv who needs protection; the angels are starting to get worried too. So, together, Constantine and Liv must use her power and his skills to travel the country, find the demons that threaten our world – and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.

From Executive Producer David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Rises) and director Neil Marshall (“Game of Thrones,” The Descent) comes a dark new thriller that proves fighting evil is a hell of a job. The series stars Matt Ryan, Lucy Griffiths, Harold Perrineau and Charles Halford.

“Constantine” premieres October 24 on NBC.

Ridley Scott’s Halo Series, HALO: NIGHTFALL

Producer Ridley Scott is currently in the process of producing a Halo web-series for Bungie, and at E3 we learned that the title of the show will be Halo: Nightfall.

The project is part of Microsoft’s Master Chief Collection, which is an anniversary edition of previous Halo games. The collection and web-series are set to be released for Xbox One in November of this year.

The series is being directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (Heroes, Under the Dome), and the live-action weekly series will center on the life of Master Chief. According to reports it will tie together the first four Halo games and also lay the narrative groundwork for Halo 5.

Steven Spielberg is also producing a separate Halo series that looks like it will end up on Showtime. I’m excited for both of these projects, and I’m confident that both of them will turn out awesome and be something that fans of the franchise will enjoy.

Hopefully we’ll get more information on what these series will be about soon!

Marvel’s Daredevil Finds its Kingpin in Vincent D’Onofrio

Following last month’s announcement of Charlie Cox in the title role, Marvel has revealed that Vincent D’Onofrio will play Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin, in the upcoming “Daredevil” Netflix series.

The role previously played by the late Michael Clarke Duncan in the 2003 feature film, this iteration of the Kingpin is officially described as being “a powerful businessman whose interests in the future of Hell’s Kitchen will bring him into conflict with the blind attorney Matt Murdock and his alter ego Daredevil.”

“We’re incredibly proud to have an actor with the gravitas and versatility of Vincent joining ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ in such an integral role,” says Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television. “Wilson Fisk is an iconic villain whose cunning and power make him the dangerous equal of our hero.”

“Marvel’s Daredevil” follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

Marvel’s first original series on Netflix is executive produced by series showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (“Spartacus,” “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer,” “Angel”) and Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, “Lost,” “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” in addition to writing the first two episodes of “Marvel’s Daredevil”), along with Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Smallville,” “Heroes”).

“Marvel’s Daredevil” is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.

“Daredevil” is just one of four new shows that will debut on Netflix from Marvel Entertainment which also include “Iron Fist,” “Luke Cage,” “Jessica Jones,” and a mini-series event of “The Defenders” that brings them all together. Production is scheduled to begin on the series this summer with a target release in 2015.

Charlie Cox is Marvel’s DAREDEVIL

Latino-Review reports that Marvel is closely looking at Charlie Cox (Stardust, Boardwalk Empire) for the role of Daredevil in their upcoming Netflix series. Latino-Review got the casting of The Flash right, let’s see if their Marvel TV sources are just as good as their DC counterparts. This is the first real casting rumor for the title character of the Netflix series. Zac Efron has been rumored for a non-specific Marvel character, and Michael C. Hall said that he’d consider the project if it was offered to him.

Cox is not as well-known to the larger public as the two aforementioned actors are, perhaps this could be a breakout role for him. The Daredevil series should be a lot better than the movie, but maybe the baggage of the previous film is keeping away better known actors.

John Wesley Shipp Cast as Henry Allen in THE FLASH

CBR recently got word that John Wesley Shipp will play Henry Allen, the father of Barry Allen in the upcoming CW show The Flash.

For those of you who don’t know, Shipp played Barry Allen in the 1990 version of The Flash. Here is the statement that site received:

Given his history with The Flash, Andrew [Kreisberg], Geoff [Johns] and I could only think of one person we wanted to play Barry’s father and that was John Wesley Shipp,” Flash executive producer Greg Berlanti said in a statement. “He gives a fantastic and emotional performance in the pilot and we are looking forward to his presence in many more episodes. Also, personally, it was just wonderful to work with him again since my days at Dawson’s Creek. He’s a great actor and a great guy.

In the show, Henry Allen has been accused of killing his wife, Barry’s mother. It sounds like he will have a prominent role in the show.

Stephen S. DeKnight Spartacus Creator Replaces Drew Goddard as DAREDEVIL director!

Within a couple of days Ant-Man lost Edgar Wright as its director and it was revealed that their Daredevil series lost its writer and director, Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods). I don’t know what is going on over at Marvel right now, but I don’t see what good can come from it. Fans like me aren’t very encouraged by this craziness.

Goddard pulled out from his directing duties on the series when he was brought in by Sony Pictures to write and direct The Amazing Spider-Man spin-off film, The Sinister Six. Goddard wrote the first two episodes of Daredevil and is still attached as an executive producer.

Deadline is now reporting that Spartacus creator Stephen S. DeKnight has been brought on as Daredevil‘s executive producer and showrunner. The studio is on the hunt for a director to replace Goddard.

Daredevil premieres on Netflix in 2015 and is the first of four 13-episode comic book series that Marvel is producing for Netflix. It will be followed by Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, with the characters from each show coming together for a miniseries called The Defenders.

Zac Efron up for Marvel Role?

We recently touched upon this in our article speculating about the Namor film, but it seems Marvel has reached out to Zac Efron (hot off the hit comedy Neighbors) for an unspecified role in an upcoming project that has a finished script. But what project? Time to speculate wildly!

This seems to be the most popular guess. Seeing that this is the first Marvel/Netflix show to air, it would sort of make sense that the project has a finished script. But I just don’t like the idea of Efron playing the protector of Hell’s Kitchen. In my mind, Matt Murdock should be a little older. After all, he is an accomplished lawyer. I just can’t imagine Efron in the role.

Danny Rand. The Living Weapon. Most of Efron’s role in Neighbors has him shirtless. The guy is ripped! Danny Rand is all about physical action and fighting with the spiritual chi. This is by far the one role I can see Efron inhabiting and kicking ass. They could make the character a bit younger and it would still work.

Now this is what my fellow writer Joey Paur speculated, but I don’t understand how this would work, as Universal owns the rights and the rumor is that he met with Marvel.

Nova (Richard Rider)

Richard Rider is the Nova member everyone thinks about when they hear Nova Corps. I wonder if there will be any allusions to him in the upcoming Guardians film.
