The Avengers 3 May Leave Out Your Favorite Characters imageWe’ve heard Marvel Studios and its filmmakers talk a lot over the years about the importance of changing up The Avengers lineup every so often. We will start to see this idea play out in Joss Whedon’s upcoming The Avengers: Age of Ultron\ – which is adding some new members to the team like Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch – but if rumors are to be believed, then the comic book movie company is planning to take that thought to the extreme with the inevitable Avengers 3.

This story comes to us from Badass Digest, which says that Marvel is contemplating keeping major Avengers characters Thor and Captain America (and possibly Black Widow) out of Avengers 3 so that they can both keep the actors under contract and avoid renegotiation. With Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans soon to be done with their existing deals with the studio, the idea is that the company would take those characters out of the spotlight for a while and focus on newer Phase 3 characters- like Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, and other “secondary characters from the MCU” who will get the chance to “stand up and prove their worth.” Then, at a later point in the franchise, Marvel would be able to bring both Thor and Captain America (and possibly Black Widow) back, which would obviously be a very big deal.

An interesting question mark in this situation, naturally, is the deal between Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. When the Iron Man star’s contract was renegotiated last summer, it was reported that the actor had signed on for two more features – specifically The Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Avengers 3. This would suggest that Iron Man could be the original Avenger who sticks around and brings all of the new guys together (the story makes no mention of Hawkeye and suggests that Hulk could be off-world by the time Avengers 3 comes rolling around).

If Captain America and Thor aren’t going to be in The Avengers 3, that could mean some very interesting things for currently in-development Captain America 3 and Thor 3. Fans have already been wildly speculating that the former could see its titular hero either die or hang up his shield, and it’s hard to say at this point what will happen in the latter when the God of Thunder learns that his father has been “deposed” and replaced by the psychotic Loki on the throne of Asgard.

Should this rumor turn out to be true – and it’s a bit iffy at this stage – then it could disrupt a whole bunch of fan theories floating around. For example, does this mean that Marvel would delay matching up the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy? And if that’s true, does that mean The Avengers 3 won’t be the Infinity Gauntlet storyline and the ultimate face-off with Thanos? The future is fuzzy, but there are a lot of interesting possibilities.

How Involved Arnold Schwarzenegger Will Be In The Terminator Franchise imageJai Courtney has all-but confirmed that Arnold Schwarzenegger will play a part in the second and third instalments to the upcoming new Terminator trilogy. Schwarzenegger was already confirmed for Terminator: Genisys, but it hadn’t yet been revealed that the 67-year-old actor/politician/bodybuilder will be sticking around for the future additions to the beloved sci-fi series too.

Courtney made the revelation during a discussion with The Arnold Fans, the online shrine to all things Schwarzenegger, which is a must-visit site for anyone with even a passing interest in Arnie. Courtney was there to promote his upcoming film, Unbroken, but as you’d imagine the conversation soon turned to Terminator. At first he was asked about a possible start-date for the next two Terminator films, before the question was then elongated to include, “Will Arnold be in the sequels in some capacity?” and “Can there be a successful Terminator film without Arnold?” Courtney then gave the answer that all Terminator fans wanted to hear …

Hard to imagine a Terminator film without Arnold. I guess we start filming – I think the plan is do the next 2 back to back in 2016.”

Jai Courtney’s declaration is the biggest hint yet that Arnold Schwarzenegger will be a part of the next two installments, as he clearly wouldn’t have questioned a Terminator film without the Austrian legend if his presence in it was still up in the air. Meanwhile, Courtney also indicated that Terminator: Genisys won’t get the adult ratings that the first two efforts of the franchise received, and it will instead be aimed at a PG-13 audience. Of course most of us want to see Genisys be given a hard-R rating that will allow it to rival the intense violence and action of its illustrious 1984 and 1991 predecessors, but in today’s modern movie climate that is just not a viable option.

Terminator: Genisys will see Arnold Schwarzenegger return as the Terminator/T-800, whose human tissue has aged, while Jai Courtney will play Kyle Reese, Emilia Clarke has inherited the role of Sarah Connor, Jason Clarke will portray John Connor. The rest of the cast will be rounded off by Doctor Who’s Matt Smith’s, Lee Byung-hun as the T-1000, Dayo Okeniyi, and J.K. Simmons in a mysterious part. Production on the blockbuster finally drew to a close back in August, and Genisys will hit cinemas on July 1, 2015, while its two sequels are planned for May 19, 2017 and June 29, 2018.

The All-Female GHOSTBUSTERS is a Go!

After all the talk, this one’s officially in the green: Paul Feig will be tackling that third installment of Ghostbusters and, just as earlier rumors assumed, it will be an all-lady affair. Get ready for the sky to crumble, dudes!

Kidding, obviously. Everything will be fine! More than fine, maybe/even! In fact, with Feig on board and The Heat writer Katie Dippold behind the script, surely there will be some funny to be found — even if the three ghost-hunting leads have vaginas instead of penii (which is totally the plural of penis, right?). It happens from time to time, as predicted in the urban legends surrounding funny females that has been passed down from generation to generation. And what with that recent blood moon we just had, surely that was a sign that the gods have called forth three worthy women who ain’t afraid of no ghosts.

And after years of waiting for Bill Murray to agree to suit up, it’s nice to see something finally come out of the long-gestating project — to say nothing of how a new take (rather than a repeat of what’s already been done twice over, cough) might breathe new life into the franchise and bring a whole new audience (and feel) into the world of stoppin’ ghosts. It’s time, America: isn’t it? Does everything have to really be all that sacred that we can’t have a little fun with it?

Robert Downey Jr. Now Says There are No Plans for Iron Man 4

Well, that didn’t last long. Just hours after appearing on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and replying “okay, yes” when asked by Ellen if there is going to be an Iron Man 4, Robert Downey Jr. taped “Late Show with David Letterman” and said the complete opposite.

“There’s no plans for an ‘Iron Man 4,’” he said. “There’s no script for ‘Iron Man 4,’ but they do have a plan and I think they’re gonna announce it. You know, [Marvel’s] very secretive about it.” After Letterman later brought up the subject again, he added, “just between us, no, but I’m gonna do other stuff with Marvel. I’m still going to be involved with Marvel and there’s gonna be plenty of fun stuff to happen.”

Downey Jr. will, of course, play Iron Man again in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron and is contracted to reprise the role for Avengers 3 as well. From his quote and what he told Ellen, it sounds like he is in negotiations to appear as Tony Stark again perhaps not in Iron Man 4, but in another film that has not been announced yet.

Kudos to everybody’s favourite forgetful fish, as Ellen DeGeneres has gotten a straight answer out of Robert Downey Jr. where countless others have failed.

In this video you can see Downey saying, very simply, very plainly, that there will be an Iron Man 4.

As you’ll have seen, he noted that there are ongoing negotiations. It’s just going to be a question of how much money his agent can convince Marvel to hand over. Anybody want to place a bet, now, as to how much he’ll get away with?

When will Iron Man 4 be released? Why, maybe between The Avengers 3 and whatever that mysterious Uber Marvel film that will follow it might be, don’t you think? Maybe we’ll get some hard answers out of New York Comic Con. Probably we won’t.

1993 CD-ROM game Myst to become a TV series

Variety reported that Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind such films as Godzilla and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, has struck a deal to develop the 1993 adventure game Myst into a TV series. Although its largely static 3D graphics and slideshow-style navigation may seem quaint now, Myst was a phenomenon in its day. Sparked by widespread adoption of CD-ROM technology, Myst became the best-selling computer game of all time, a record that stood until The Sims surpassed it in 2002.

If you’re not familiar with Myst, you might be wondering why such a big hit hasn’t been optioned for a movie or TV project before now. If you are familiar with Myst, you might be wondering how the hell Legendary will make a TV show out of it. Because the thing about Myst is there aren’t any people around. You do catch glimpses of other characters, mostly through flickering videobook portals to strange realms, but you spend most of your time silently exploring beautiful, abandoned islands and solving the puzzles therein. So unless we’re going to watch a mute hero fiddle with the controls on a rocket ship’s pipe organ for an hour, the creators of this show will have to take a few liberties with the source material. The nature of those liberties remains to be determined, but Variety says that Myst creators Rand and Robyn Miller will be “creatively involved” in the show, potentially with a video game tie-in.

ZOMBIELAND 2 Is Finally Moving Forward

Would you look at that! Sony Pictures is finally ready to move forward with Zombieland 2, and they’ve hired Dave Callaham to write the script. He is the writer who worked on screenplays for The Expendables films and also has a story credit on the most recent Godzilla movie. He will work alongside director Ruben Fleischer, who is expected to return to helm the sequel.

Back in 2013 there was an attempt made to adapt the original film into a series on Amazon, but it completely failed and never got past the pilot episode. It’s one of those things that just didn’t hit with audiences, and it wasn’t vey good. I really enjoyed the first movie, and I think there’s a lot of potential for a great sequel. Hopefully they can come up with another fun story to tell.

There’s no word on whether Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, or Abigail Breslin would reprise their roles, but it’s be great if they did. I know all their careers have blown up since Zombieland came out, but they could always make room to come back if they wanted.

I AM LEGEND Is Getting Rebooted

Warner Bros. has been trying to figure out a way to get a sequel for I Am Legend off the ground for years. Well, they’ve finally given up on that sequel and they are looking to just reboot the damn thing.

The news comes from Deadline, who says that the franchise reboot will not include Will Smith. The actor doesn’t seem very interested in doing any sequels these days anyway. He’s been dodging that Independence Day sequel for years.

The studio is basically taking an already existing spec script that they acquired earlier this year called A Garden At The End Of The World, and changing it up to fit the I Am Legend story. The script was written by Gary Graham, who worked at the Apple store in midtown Manhattan before his script was picked up.

The original script is described as “a sci-fi version of John Wayne’s The Searchers.” The studio executives and producers felt that there were enough similarities to the themes and mythology of I Am Legend in the script that they asked Graham to redraft the script so that it would fit the franchise.

That’s too bad. I would have much rather seen a movie made based on the original script than have it changed to fit a property that they want to reboot.

‘Star Wars’ Toy Documentary Launches on Vimeo Under Exclusive Digital Pact

star wars documentary plastic galaxyA documentary film covering three decades of “Star Wars” toy culture, “Plastic Galaxy,” is now available exclusively for digital rental and purchase from digital-video site Vimeo under a pact with Gravitas Ventures.

The 67-minute film features interviews with former employees of Kenner — the original “Star Wars” toy licensee — as well as experts, authors and collectors as it looks at the history of “Star Wars” action figures and other toys. Film is directed by Brian Stillman, who produced with Karl Tate under their X-Ray Films banner, and is distributed by Gravitas.

“Plastic Galaxy” is available from Vimeo for $4.99 for a 24-hour rental or $12.99 to purchase. The film also was released on DVD in January 2014.

The “Star Wars” franchise is now under the aegis of Disney, which acquired Lucasfilm in October 2012. J.J. Abrams is directing the next theatrical installment, “Star Wars: Episode VII,” set for Dec. 18, 2015, release. Among other efforts to mint coin from the space-opera brand, Disney is launching animated skein “Star Wars Rebels” Oct. 13 on cabler Disney XD, preceded by a one-hour film that aired Monday on Disney XD and will hit Disney Channel on Friday. Mouse House has already ordered a second season of “Star Wars Rebels.”

The “Plastic Galaxy” pickup is part of Vimeo’s recent efforts to secure exclusive windows for VOD content. Last fall, the IAC-owned vidsite hired Greg Clayman, who previously headed digital initiatives at News Corp and Viacom, as g.m. audience networks to cut deals with content creators.

‘Better Call Saul’ Gets 2015 Premiere, Early Season 2 Renewal

We’ve got both some good and bad news for fans of Breaking Bad‘s resident criminal lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk). First, the bad news. Contrary to previous reports, AMC’s spin-off/prequel series Better Call Saul will not in fact premiere in 2014. Instead, early 2015 has been chosen for Saul’s 10-episode debut season.

Now, the good news, which just might make up for the delay. Better Call Saul has already been renewed for a 13-episode second season, guaranteeing that fans will get to spend at least 23 more hours in Vince Gilligan’s twisted version of New Mexico.

While a specific premiere date has yet to be set, AMC has confirmed that Better Call Saul will be paired up with The Walking Dead (and its sister show Talking Dead) in both the first quarter of 2015 and the first quarter of 2016. Walking Dead’s usual pattern is airing 8 episodes from mid-October to early December, then airing 8 more episodes from mid-February to late March. This would put Saul’s likely debut date sometime in February 2015, possibly March at the latest.

On the surface, Better Call Saul doesn’t exactly seem like a natural partner for The Walking Dead. After all, the former is a comedic crime/legal drama, and the latter is a dark, grim, post-apocalyptic horror story. It’s hard to get much further apart in genre than that. That said, Walking Dead is the most watched scripted series in all of television among the prized 18-49 demographic. AMC would have to be nuts to not try and use that platform to promote Saul. Expect the network to run plenty of ads for Saul during the first half of Walking Dead’s fifth season, and maybe even have Odenkirk appear as a guest on Talking Dead. AMC clearly wants Saul to be a huge hit, and they have no bigger recruiting tool than Robert Kirkman’s zombie opus.

Jonathan Banks from Breaking Bad Joining Better Call Saul Better Call Saul Gets 2015 Premiere, Early Season 2 Renewal

Joining the always hilarious Odenkirk in Saul’s regular cast will be fellow Breaking Bad vet Jonathan Banks, reprising his role as professional fixer Mike Ehrmantraut. As if bringing back a fan favorite character wasn’t enough of a casting coup, also entering the mix is comedy veteran Michael McKean, who’ll play rival lawyer Dr. Thurber. Few comic actors can trade lines with Bob Odenkirk without being outclassed, but it can be easily argued that McKean is one of them. The rumor mill has also suggested that Aaron Paul will put in some type of appearance as Jesse Pinkman, although that has never been officially confirmed in any way by AMC.

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan is set to direct Better Call Saul’s first episode, and will then share showrunning duties with Peter Gould. That arrangement makes perfect sense, as while Gould created the Saul Goodman character during his time as a writer/producer for Breaking Bad, he has no experience holding the top job on a show. If year one goes well, don’t be surprised if Gilligan bows out completely, handing the reins fully over to Gould.

Breaking Bad was a cultural phenomenon quite unlike most cable dramas. Will Better Call Saul repeat its success? AMC better hope so, as they now have Saul Goodman’s services on retainer for the next two years.

Better Call Saul premieres in the first quarter of 2015. It has already been renewed for a second season.
