MTV News caught up with Will Smith at the MTV Movie Awards (a feat that shouldn’t have been too difficult, considering, you know, they were hosting it), and they asked the erstwhile Fresh Prince if he was looking forward to reprising his Suicide Squad role of Deadshot in either a solo movie or a Batman movie, and Smith had an interesting answer: he said he wanted Deadshot to actually become Batman.
At one point Smith mentions that in the comics, Deadshot steps into the role of Batman when Bruce Wayne gets injured, but I’m not sure exactly which comic he’s referring to. It’s been a while since I’ve picked up a Batman comic, so maybe fans can illuminate this in the comments, but he might be talking about either Deadshot’s first appearance (when the character tries to beat out Batman for the favor of Gotham City) or “Batman: Bad Blood”, in which Dick Grayson takes over for Batman when Wayne goes missing.
Either way, it’s an idea that I can absolutely see WB/DC incorporating into a movie somewhere down the line in an effort to keep crossing over those two individual franchises. We already know that Batman has more than just a tiny cameo in Suicide Squad, so it wouldn’t be crazy to think those characters could show up in his solo movie (or beyond).
Of course, this is all on the assumption that Deadshot survives at the end of Suicide Squad. Consider the flegling’s DCEU’s reputation as “The Murderverse,” that is not a given.
What do you think?
Suicide Squad blasts into theaters on August 5th.
