Joel Kinnaman Talks About SUICIDE SQUAD 2 and Says it Will be “More Grounded”

Suicide Squad was a bad film. I went in with small hopes for Suicide Squad. I had heard that it wasn’t great but was fun. I was very disappointed. The first third of the movie was maybe fun and then it just got worse and worse at every turn. Yahoo! Recently talked with Joel Kinnaman, who played Colonel Rick Flag, and asked where the first film went wrong and how the sequel would be improved. His response to the first question was very quick and very blunt: “The third act.” I don’t know that I agree with him. While the third act was pretty bad, I feel like everything started to fall apart during the second act. His response to the second question is as follows:

“It was a great set-up, great characters. I think when we do the second one I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a more grounded version of the film. The characters are so extreme it could be more effective if we saw less sorcery. I think the characters become more extreme if you see them in conjunction with real people.”

What does he mean by “more grounded”? Is he really saying that there was too much magic involved and that’s what caused the movie to fail? I don’t think that the characters being extreme and having a lot of sorcery was the problem with the film. I don’t even know if I’d agree there was a great set-up. I think the problem was that the movie was really a Deadshot movie with a Harley Quinn side plot and the other characters thrown in so they could call it Suicide Squad. We don’t see a lot of growth from any of the characters, but the one with the most growth is Deadshot. Lack of growth and poorly written characters are not symptoms of extreme characters and magic; they’re symptoms of bad writing and directing. You can have a good movie with extreme characters and sorcery.

Suicide Squad 2 will supposedly have Black Adam (played by Dwayne Johnson) as the villain. Maybe this time they can stick to that plan instead of having everyone think the Joker is the villain and then show him for maybe 15 minutes. Can we stick to one villain and not do a bait and switch? Hopefully Gavin O’Connor will be able to write and direct a better movie. I want DC to be able to succeed, but they’re really losing me.
