Entertainment Weekly has shared some new photos from a few high-profile upcoming films. The images include our first good look at the Dragon in Disney’s Pete’s Dragon; Spock getting his ass kicked in Star Trek: Beyond; a good look at the giant in Steven Spielberg’s The BFG; and a new view of the Ghostbusters battling ghosts with their proton packs.
Those who attended CinemaCon got to see some new footage from these films. Not surprisingly, many received positive feedback. But perhaps the biggest surprise was that not all the films received unanimous support. The synopsis for each movie is also included below.
Pete’s Dragon:
For years, old wood-carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon. Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” opens in U.S. theaters on August 12, 2016.
Star Trek: Beyond:
The further adventures of James T. Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew. The movie was directed by Justin Lin (Fast and Furious movies), and it stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Idris Elba, and Sofia Boutella. Star Trek Beyond opens in theaters on July 22nd, 2016.
The BFG:
The talents of three of the world’s greatest storytellers – Roald Dahl, Walt Disney and Steven Spielberg – finally unite to bring Dahl’s beloved classic “The BFG” to life. Directed by Spielberg, Disney’s “The BFG” tells the imaginative story of a young girl and the Giant who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country. The BFG (Mark Rylance), while a giant himself, is a Big Friendly Giant and nothing like the other inhabitants of Giant Country. Standing 24-feet tall with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell, he is endearingly dim-witted and keeps to himself for the most part.
Ghostbusters:
Sony Pictures showed an extended clip at CinemaCon that featued our leads jumping around and screaming like 8-year-old girls after they had their first paranormal experience.
Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) are a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. A few years later Gilbert lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia University, but her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia. Gilbert reunites with Yates and others when ghosts invade Manhattan and she and her team have to save the world.
