James Wan Officially Directing ROBOTECH

We learned that James Wan will be directing Aquaman for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, but that’s not the only movie he’s attached to direct. THR is reporting that Wan is also officially taking on the challenge of bringing Robotech to the big screen.

Back in April, it was reported that he was in talks with Sony Pictures to take the project. In that initial report, we learned that the studio was willing to work around whatever projects he ended up attaching himself to, so that allowed him to do Aquaman as well.

The movie has been in development for years, I guess it was just waiting for the right person for the job.

Robotech takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific island. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off an alien invasion, with the fate of the human race ending up in the hands of two young pilots.

The movie is being developed by producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton from a script written by Michael Gordon. All three of them worked together on Zack Snyder’s 300 films. Unfortunately they also worked on films such as The Spiderwick Chronicles, Fame, Immortals, From Dusk Till Dawn 3, G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and lots of other mediocre-to-bad movies.

With a live-action Robotech officially out of development hell, and a live-action Ghost in the Shell in production, which anime adaption could be next? Battle Angel Alita? Akira? Evangelion? If I was a producer, I would try to get my hands on the rights to adapt Cowboy Bebop, the one anime title that is the closest thing to a sure-hit for Hollwood. 🙂
