Columbia Pictures is set to develop a remake of the 1983 action thriller Blue Thunder. The original movie focused on a high-tech experimental helicopter and a police pilot who learns of the sinister implications of the vehicle. It was configured for law enforcement to use in combat against possible large-scale civil disobedience during the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The script for the film is being written by Craig Kyle, who is an ex-Marvel Studios executive currently scripting Thor: Ragnarok. The remake will feature a modern day take on the story, and will focus on the world’s most advanced drone technology. There are a couple of other drone type films in development, including Ethan Hawke’s Good Kill and director Gavin Hood’s Eye in the Sky. The Top Gun sequel that has been in development over the last few years is also said to be about drones.
The original movie was directed by John Balham (WarGames) and starred Roy Scheider (Jaws). This has potential to be a pretty cool flick, but I doubt they’ll get anyone as awesome as Scheider to take on the lead role.
I remember loving this film when I was younger. I think I even enjoyed the TV show, which featured a young Dana Carvey, and NFL Hall of Famers, Dick Butkus and Bubba Smith. It was an awesome helicopter! That is, until Airwolf came along. Of course, both pale in comparison to Cobra Command. I would love to see what can be done to bring this film back to life and a fresh modern perspective. Were you a fan of the movie? Did you watch any of the 11 epsidoes of the very short-lived TV series? Would you like to see this remade? We want to know your thoughts on this!
