Given the popularity of the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage play, it was natural that there was going to be interest in adapting the show into a film. And now the New York Daily News have reported that not only are Warner Bros interesting in bringing the play to the big screen, but are also chasing Daniel Radcliffe to reprise his role as Harry Potter.
While nothing has been confirmed at this stage, a source told the NY Daily News that the studio could be planning to bring the play to life on the big screen “as soon as 2020,” and potentially even turn the script into a trilogy.
A Hollywood source allegedly told NY Daily News:
“Warners is secretly working on getting the movie rights and a screenplay settled, and of course in their minds only one man should be Harry. However he has made it clear that his mind is certainly not focused on returning to the role anytime soon — and that could be until he hits 40.”
But actually, Radcliffe not returning to the franchise until he was 40 would be rather fitting for the role. As any Potterhead worth their salt would be able to tell you, Daniel Radcliffe is clearly far too young for the role. The Harry Potter of Cursed Child is 36-years-old, while Radcliffe is currently 27, and would still only be 30 if the movie went into production in 2019, for a 2020 release. And let us not forget the last time the film aged up it’s actors:
Aside from the fact that Redcliffe isn’t quite the right age for the role, he’s also enjoying a very successful post-Potter career. This year alone he’s had two critical acclaimed roles in the films Swiss Army Man and Imperium, and also has a role planned in Greg McLean’s upcoming action-adventure, Jungle. That, coupled with the fact that starring in eight Harry Potter films has secured his financial future for life, means that the studio would have a tough time convincing him to return.
Collection of short stories to be released
On September 6 a collection of short stories based on life in the Harry Potter universe will be released on Amazon (sorry, sadly only in eBook form at this stage). One book will focus on some of the professors of Hogwarts including Minerva McGonagall and Remus Lupin, another will concentrate on the darker side of the wizarding world, including writing on Azkaban prison, and the third will tell readers all about life at Hogwarts.
