The ongoing story of Iggy Azalea’s Great Escape Tour has a new chapter, and it will be its last.
The rapper has cancelled the tour, according to emails received by ticket holders, as reported by Just Jared.
“The Iggy Azalea Great Escape Tour scheduled for this fall has been cancelled and refunds are available at point of purchase,” the email reportedly read. “There will be a new tour planned around Iggy‘s new record to be released in 2016 and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
The “Fancy” MC first announced the tour in December 2014, and then revealed the dates later that month, when she shared them with fans on Twitter (back in the days before she left social media).
However, in March, her label, Def Jam, released a statement, saying that the shows would be delayed as she continued to prepare.
“Tour dates for Grammy-nominated Iggy Azalea’s The Great Escape Tour, have been rescheduled due to tour production delays,” they said. “It is extremely important to Iggy that she delivers the show she envisaged to share with her fans and that requires more time in development.”
“I’m a psychopath,” she said in an interview with AMP 97.1. “I would be making a lot of sacrifices and cuts and changes and compromises would have to be made to get this thing done in time. So I really considered what I wanted to do: keep and honor the tickets and this date for fans but not the show I’d envisioned or kind I’ve promised them, a lesser version of it with maybe not so many people like jumping out of the ceilings and flying all over the place, or do I want to move it and have the absolute best show, the show that I envisioned? And obviously I’ve chosen to move it.”
If we read between the lines, it seems Def Jam has little to no faith in Ms Azalea’s ability to perform on stage. They need more time to add more distractions on stage to mask her singing inability, or more equipment for Auto-tuning, or lip-syncing. Since the best part of her songs are the ones with the featured artists, how will Iggy and Def Jam try to recreate the over-engineered studio sound that her fans expect to hear?
