Borderlands devs talk diversity, Borderlands 3

When asked about diversity in their games, concept artist Amanda Christensen replied:

“It’s just good design…it’s way more fun to design people from a wide spectrum than the same bro and hot chick over and over again.”

Joel Eschler, from 2K Australia, added that the diversity wasn’t meant to be an obvious attempt to be seen to be diverse, but more of an everyday thing:

“We just make it very mundane. It’s just another fact about that character… it’s just part of who they are.”

Randy Pitchford, the President of Gearbox Software, finished with an anecdote:

“This guy sent me an email once, he was really upset…he and his brother were having this argument over whether or not Sir Hammerlock was an African-American.

And I’m like…they’re on Pandora. I’m not even sure if Earth exists in this universe. Africa… America? I’m not even sure they exist. If you’re curious about the colour of his skin, well… you can see it! Who cares!”

So, there you go. But what about that mysterious “Borderlands 3” you saw in the title? Well, on the same panel, Gearbox President Randy Pitchford wrapped up by advertising a new opportunity…

“We want to think about the future…what the next Borderlands game is.

We want to get started soon, and we want some help.

If you are awesome at something…if you think you’re better at some aspect of game design than even we are…we want you to help us.

We want to have the best Borderlands team in the world, because we want to make the best game in the world.”

Could that be Borderlands 3? This time last year they said they were busy… but that could have been Tales From The Borderlands, the Pre-Sequel or the Handsome Collection. Or all of those. Either way, they’re free now.

Jobs for this mysterious new Borderlands game can be found on the Gearbox Software website
