The Crow Reboot Starring Jason Momoa Begins Filming Next January

Image result for the crowIt was back in 2008 that news first broke of a reboot of Alex Proyas’ 1994 film The Crow – itself an adaptation of the 1989 comic book series by James O’Barr. The reboot was to be written and directed by Blade and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen director Stephen Norrington, but that never came to pass. Instead, the movie has repeatedly changed writers, directors, and leading actors over the eight years that have passed since then.

The number of stars that have been attached to the reboot of The Crow at one point or another is dizzying, and includes Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans, Norman Reedus, and Jack Huston. The latest rumor about the movie had Aquaman‘s Jason Momoa set to star as the titular hero. Despite his name being only the latest in a very long line of names tied to the role, the rumor was at least enough to inspire a mockup of what the former (and possibly returning) “Game of Thrones” star would look like dressed up in The Crow‘s signature ’90s goth aesthetic.

Now The Wrap is reporting that multiple sources have confirmed that The Crow reboot will start production this coming January, with Colin Hardy directing and Momoa in the lead role. The Wrap had previously reported that Colin Hardy was out of the director’s chair after a change in management at Relativity, the studio producing the reboot. However, an Instagram post from Momoa hinted otherwise back in August.

Relativity’s new version of The Crow is set to follow the same basic story of Eric Draven, a murder victim who returns from the dead to avenge both his own death and that of his fiancée. The reboot is said to be closer to the source material of O’Barr’s original comic than Proyas’ film was. It’s little surprise, then, that Proyas declared the reboot to be “unnecessary” while promoting his last film, the box office bomb Gods of Egypt.

Whether Hardy and his bosses at Relativity can patch together a decent film after it has spent nearly a decade in development hell remains to be seen. Typically it is not a good sign when a movie is bandied about for as long as The Crow has been. However, with a star as big as Momoa attached to it, especially considering it will come out after his solo debut as Aquaman, its prospects are looking up for the first time in a while.
