Before it gets a new host in Mary Jane, review the symbiote selections!

On June 14, the Venom symbiote gets a brand new, untarnished host in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: RENEW YOUR VOWS #8 written by Gerry Conway with art by Ryan Stegman. That’s right, responsible mom, loving wife, and trend setting fashion blogger and boutique owner Mary Jane Watson-Parker tackles a new challenge: showing that alien space suit who’s boss.

To see just where the bar is set let’s take a look back on past hosts…

R-Rated Venom

So a new movie starring Spider-Man villain The Venom has been officially announced, and Sony has assured us that it’s going to be rated R. And I, for one, am delighted. I’ve been a fan of Marvel Comics’ The Venom character since I was a little German boy clipping grass for nickels to buy comic books, and there’s one thing that has consistently frustrated me with every adaptation of the black-suited villain.

Venom Premium Format Figure by Sideshow Collectibles

“Welcome to my neighborhood, Spider-Man! Would you be my… could you be my… neighbor?”

Venom Premium Format™ Figure How do you begin to describe Venom? He’s part antagonist, part anti-hero.  He’s part man, part monster.  He’s one of Spider-Man’s most dangerous foes, but he’s also sometimes a grudging and reluctant ally. Whatever he is, Venom’s larger than life personality and twisted appearance has made him incredibly popular with many of the artists and designers here at Sideshow –  so for us, adding him to our rogues gallery has been a true labor of love!

Anti-Venom Statue by Sideshow Collectibles AND Prime one studios

“See, this is what I’m talking about! NO ONE takes crazy Eddie Brock seriously.” – Edward Brock

Anti-Venom Statue Developed and manufactured in partnership with Prime 1 Studio, we are proud to present Anti-Venom. Eddie Brock was debonded from the Venom symbiote, traces of it were left in his body. Later, suffering from cancer, Brock started working as a volunteer in the F.E.A.S.T. Center. Martin Li, the alter-ego of Mr. Negative, and founder of F.E.A.S.T. used his powers to cure Eddie’s cancer. In the process, he accidentally infused the remnants of the symbiote in Eddie’s bloodstream with his power and fused them to his white blood cells, creating a new hybrid symbiote which manifested when the Venom symbiote attempted to leave its then-current host and return to Eddie. This new symbiote had powerful healing powers and other powers that differ from the Venom symbiote, producing antibodies that can cure any known disease and remove any other impurities within a human body. Unlike other symbiotes, this symbiote is completely mindless and Eddie Brock is in full control of his actions. Continue reading

What really happened with The Amazing Spider-Man 3

In fewer than two decades, the Spider-Man franchise has already amassed a history of stops and restarts. But the most surprising were the sudden cancellations of Amazing Spider-Man 3 and the spin-offs planned to follow. It was confusing and strange, but there’s an interesting story behind why the sequel to a successful movie got tossed in the garbage. Continue reading

Venom Movie Plans Are Back On

Plans for a Venom movie are back on!

Sony Pictures has revived plans for a Venom movie, unrelated to the upcoming MCU Spider-Man.

In a surprising turn of events, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Sony Pictures is once again looking at bringing Venom, the Marvel Comics antihero, to the big screen. According to the trade, however, this doesn’t sound like it’s going to be a Venom movie connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in any way. The trade notes that the new film is unconnected to next year’s Spider-Man, which is set to star Tom Holland as your friendly neighborhood webslinger. Continue reading
