Grimlock (Transformers) Vs. Mechagodzilla (Godzilla)

grimlockvsmechagozillaIn our next “Versus” round up, we have two metal robotic chomping monster T-Rexes!  Who would be king of the metal monsters? We have Grimlock from the Transformers, and we have Mechagodzilla from Godzilla! We will let you decide! Here is a little something about each robot:

Grimlock
Grimlock3Grimlock is the name of several robot characters in the Transformers franchise. He is usually portrayed as the immensely strong, power-mongering leader of the Dinobots, a small sub-faction of Autobots that transform into dinosaurs. In 2007, USA Today polled people as to which Transformer they want to appear in the second installment in the Transformers film series; Grimlock came in tied for second with Devastator.

Grimlock is the most fearsome and powerful member of the Dinobots. Grimlock can be cold, merciless and contemptuous of those he considers beneath him, such as human beings, and at times, even Autobot leader Optimus Prime himself, who Grimlock would gladly supplant as Autobot leader if he were able to, giving him a superiority complex as indicated by his Generation 1 tech specs. Nevertheless, he is a valiant warrior whose actions command respect from all who are witness to them, both friend and foe. One of his most distinguishing features is his famous speech impediment, which leads him to shorten sentences and refer to himself constantly in the third person, never “I” (e.g. “Me Grimlock no bozo! Me KING!”) The reason for this varies from depiction to depiction, with some making it the result of true mental limitations, and others vocal processor damage, or a ruse Grimlock perpetrates to allow others to think of him as less intelligent than he actually is. However he is still an Autobot and is willing to protect the Earth as much as the Autobots, and does also show a begrudging respect for Optimus Prime. However he was more accepting for Rodimus as leader when he became a Prime.

Grimlock is among the strongest of the Transformers, possibly an equal to, or even superior to Optimus Prime and Megatron in certain continuities (he was shown to be stronger than Megatron in the G1 cartoon, but in the Marvel comics, Megatron was able to defeat Grimlock and the rest of the Dinobots in their initial encounter). In Tyrannosaurus Rex mode, his powerful jaws can snap virtually anything that comes between them – from steel cables to a Decepticon limb. He also can shoot an energy ray from his mouth.

In robot mode, Grimlock wields an energon sword, whose blade is sheathed in crackling energon and can slice a 2-foot-thick (0.61 m) concrete wall in one slash. He also uses a double-barreled, self-propelled rocket launcher. He is almost invulnerable in his Tyrannosaurus Rex mode.

Grimlock possesses immense physical strength, second only to Optimus Prime and Megatron. He has proven both skilled and physically strong enough to outbrawl the likes of Scorponok on multiple occasions. He is also nearly invulnerable to all kinds of physical damage, once surviving an explosion of a large refinery of energon at point blank range with seemingly little trauma. His great strength and durability makes him a formidable hand-to-hand combatant. In dinosaur mode his jaws are strong enough to snap in to virtually anything that comes between them.

He has also proved on multiple occasions to be quite intelligent and tactical, both as a fighter and as a leader. Most fail to see that through his brutish exterior and speech pattern, though.

Mechagodzilla
Mechagodzilla_NeoMechagodzilla is the designated name of three separate fictional mecha that appeared in the Toho’s Godzilla film series. The character first appeared in the 1974 film Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla as an extraterrestrial villain opposing Godzilla. In subsequent iterations, Mechagodzilla is portrayed as a man-made hero fighting against the villainous Godzilla. In all incarnations, Mechagodziila appears as a robotic doppelgänger of Godzilla.

The original Mechagodzilla was created as a weapon of destruction by the Simians, and the only one to be referred to by numerics within the movies themselves. First appearing in a pseudo-flesh outer covering and masquerading as the real Godzilla, Mechagodzilla begins a few attacks against Japan. Mechagodzilla then overpowers Godzilla’s ally, Anguirus, and forces him to flee, but in the process damages his disguise. Godzilla then appears from a warehouse and destroys the pseudo-flesh disguise, forcing Mechagodzilla to reveal itself in full. Their initial battle resulted in a tie; as Godzilla was severely wounded and Mechagodzilla was forced back into the Simian’s base for repair. Fearing for the robot’s advance, a priestess of the Azumi royal family, awakened King Caesar, an ancient Okinawan deity. Despite the shisa golem’s best efforts, the rebuilt Mechagodzilla soundly trounced the guardian. However, Godzilla joined the fight and cooperated with King Caesar in decapitating Mechagodzilla, causing the robot to detonate in defeat.

The Simians, though, rebuilt their dreadnought in Terror of Mechagodzilla. Having learned the value of teamwork firsthand, the Simians recruited the shunned oceanic scientist, Dr. Mafune, to enslave the aquatic dinosaur Titanosaurus as an ally. The mecha was further modified with living human brain cells, and had its control circuitry integrated into the body of Dr. Mafune’s daughter, Katsura. Godzilla tried to exploit the flaw found in their last brawl, but this time the Simians prepared for it and had installed a secondary head to allow the mech to operate without its head. Mechagodzilla was once more defeated after Katsura committed suicide, destroying the mech’s controls and freezing it long enough for Godzilla to use his atomic heat ray on Mechagodzilla’s headless body, causing it to explode in a massive fireball and finishing off the imposter once and for all.

Showa Mechagodzilla is 50 meters (164 feet) tall, weighs 40,000 metric tons (44,092 short tons), and can fly at speeds of up to Mach 5.

Heisei MechaGodzilla is protected by an armor plating made from an alloy called NT-1, which is coated in a layer of artificial diamond. The coating allows it to absorb energy from energy weapons such as Godzilla’s atomic breath, which is then transferred to its ultimate weapon, the devastating Plasma Grenade, which is located on its waist.

MechaGodzilla was also able to absorb energy from Rodan’s heat beam. It also possesses laser cannons in its eyes and a mega-buster ray from its mouth. The mega-buster in particular appears to be as powerful as Godzilla’s own atomic ray. In its debut, MechaGodzilla fires its Mega Buster Ray from his mouth. However, in the Atari Trilogy of games, he fires it from his eyes, much like Showa MechaGodzilla.

MechaGodzilla can fire tranquilizer missiles from its hips, paralysis missiles from the shoulders, and shock anchor cables from its wrists, enabling the robot to deliver powerful electrical charges in a struck opponent. This was later modified into a weapon called the “G-Crusher.” MechaGodzilla’s armor is nearly invincible, able to take a super-powered Godzilla’s spiral breath repeatedly before finally going out of commission.

Finally, MechaGodzilla can attach to the warship Garuda. Upon doing so, it gains Garuda’s powerful maser cannons, as well as the ability to hover above the ground by using Garuda’s massive engines to achieve lift. This version is known as “Super MechaGodzilla.” Super MechaGodzilla is one of Godzilla’s most powerful adversaries, defeating both the King and Rodan, and came closer to killing Godzilla than any of Godzilla’s other adversaries.

MechaGodzilla, however, does have one major weakness, hand to hand combat. For all its weapons, it’s lacking any real ability to fight up close, losing an eye to Rodan when it manage to get in close, and proving no match for Godzilla when he got close enough.
In the manga adaptation of the film Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 2, MechaGodzilla is capable of launching its arms and a device on its forehead. This ability was witnessed in action when MechaGodzilla attempted to attack Godzilla’s secondary brain again after the atomic reptile was instilled with Rodan’s energy.
